Smog: A Silent Killer

High-Level Project Summary

The challenge we chose was to demonstrate how climate change affects us. For this, we chose the aspect of climate change we face every day: smog. In order to show how it affected us, we decided to make a 3-minute video illustrating the causes and effects of smog. Smog, being a heavy issue worldwide, is unfortunately not as touched upon as other consequences/effects of climate change are. By having taken up the challenge on how we are affected by climate change, we hope to be able to raise awareness and educate people on the effects of smog and the steps to reducing it, which will hopefully result in its reach and effect decreasing.

Detailed Project Description

We decided to create a video that illustrates the various causes and effects of global warming, as well as methods to prevent it, in hopes to raise awareness on how we can work together to resolve this overwhelming issue.

We believe our video demonstrates educational information in a fun and engaging way, which keeps viewers captivated while teaching them about global warming.

In summary, our project is a YouTube video with a very straightforward purpose: to inform, explain and educate. Raising awareness is highly beneficial and raising it regarding the effects of smog will help prevent future generations from suffering as the current generations do. We hope to spread enough awareness on the topic of smog, that people start taking steps to prevent, or at the very least minimize it and its effects. To create the video, we used the voice memo apps to record our voices, and Adobe Premier Pro CC to edit the video. The music was taken from https://www.chosic.com/download-audio/28930/ and the copyright free clips from https://www.pexels.com/search/videos/nature%20growing/ .

Hackathon Journey

Ayesha: Team leader and initiator, she overlooked the process of video making and editing. Apart from doing the most research, she also wrote the script and edited the video.

Hayyah: Group member and content researcher. All the textual work was included in the PowerPoint was provided through Hayyah, who also assisted in research for the PowerPoint and wrote the content within.

Dua: The third and final group member, she overlooked the presentation. Formatting and presentation were in her hands.

The three of us were designated individual work, which was listed above. But there was cohesion involved and that took place while making the video; each one of us spoke our scripted lines. Without Ayesha it would’ve been rather disorganized without a script and not as immersive without a video. Without Hayyah the PowerPoint would lack its informative touch and content. Without Dua the presentation would lack visual appeal and structure.

Doing this project helped us gain insight on the topic of smog and its long-term effects as well as short term ones. Taking upon this challenge meant self-educating and implementing the learnt knowledge into an interactive form for everyone to learn from like we did. With the diverse ideas of three minds, we were able to come up with our own take upon this topic; while grabbing the viewer's attention and providing insightful and educational information in a fun and engaging way.

Overall, despite having some setbacks such as overlapping dates and times, we enjoyed working on creating this project. We hope to be able to raise awareness regarding the effects of smog and prevent future generations from suffering as the current generations do.
