Blue Marble

High-Level Project Summary

Our project is about preventing and protecting our cities from sinkholes. Sinkhole threats can be controlled if proper steps are taken with immediate effect. Through our project, we've shown the reasons behind the creation of sinkholes and we’ve provided the most feasible solutions to protect us from sinkholes. We have tried to point out the reasons for a sinkhole and what the ways are to prevent it. Besides that, we have also built a website through which users can read NASA data using the EONET API, an article section, quizzes to remember and test the memory of the users about the article, and a prototype of a game that will let the players know how to save their surroundings.

Detailed Project Description

Our project, Blue Marble, is named after our team name, which aims to minimize the effects of global warming as much as possible. Our core focus was to save our cities from future sinkholes. While performing these solutions, a proper drainage system will be built, which will help minimize water pollution. Less dependence on underground water will ensure the use of processed fresh river water and it will act as a barrier between the increasing salinity in the river water and the rising sea level. Forestation will result in cooler weather and more rain. Every one of them is interlinked with each other and will improve the whole ecosystem. Our main goal was to focus on the most dangerous threats in order to create public awareness and let people know more about NASA EONET API data available on our websites and more information about global warming. The prototype game provided on the website will let the user know the necessary steps to ensure safe and secure surroundings. The future plan is to make this game location-based, so the user will be able to see the threats around his location and should be able to react and take the necessary steps to know the results of his decisions and react accordingly.

Space Agency Data

We have used,

  1. EONET API

We have used the EONET API from NASA Open API. With the help of the EONET API, we had the data (name, category, coordinates, etc.) about recent natural calamities around the globe. And we have used that data to build a section on our website. We have shown some of the calamities with their names and categories. And we have added a link; it will redirect the user to a new page where they will be able to see the affected area due to that calamity.

Hackathon Journey

The journey of the NASA Space Apps Challenge Bangladesh 2022 was thrilling and educative. The atmosphere, the guidance from the mentors, the team, and the challenges are worth remembering. Every day I try to find the best possible solutions for my challenges, as the NASA Open APIs are updated frequently. Last-minute editing and submission, all the nail-biting nervousness, getting selected in the top 50 and categorized under Group A, and the friendly mentors and their experiences give us a boost to aim higher and be hopeful to win globally. The most concerning topic around the globe is global warming and its effects are affecting human lives and taking us to near extinction. NASA and its scientists are constantly trying to find an efficient solution, and arranging a competition like this inspires the younger generation and makes them more responsible and conscious about our environment and its surroundings. Accepting the opinions and ideas of our project and finding the possibility of the project proves we are heading in the right direction to solve this global issue and how concerned we are. Our aim was to make people aware and responsible, so we went for the biggest threats, and the interlinked solutions solve most of the threats caused by global warming. I would like to thank all the mentors for always helping us day and night and my teammates for sticking together even when no one believed in us and for making it to the Top 50. Hopefully, we will be victorious and our project will be impactful in solving the challenge.
