CO2 Attack

High-Level Project Summary

Through an analysis of CO2 data at the Bolivian and global level, the increase of CO2 in the last 7 years was visualized, a season in which the greatest amount of forest burning in Bolivia took place. CO2 emissions increase the greenhouse effect process, which is no longer a normal process. Our objective was to explain the effects and causes of climate change, with a focus on CO2 as emissions from forest burning and its effects on the population.

Detailed Project Description

INTRODUCTION

Climate change is a latent problem around the world, in this project we focus on Bolivia and how it behaved in recent years. Of the 4 greenhouse gas effects, we worked with CO2 and how this is the biggest cause of air pollution in Bolivia. The largest amount of CO2 is produced by the deforestation, these data were obtained both from NASA, local government database and others. The affected hectares were multiplied 37 times compared to the previous century 1999, this in turn is linked to air pollution.

EXPLANATION

From the end of 2000 to the end of 2021, a total of approximately 1,342,174 fires have been presented at the national level, which has presented a low amount during the first years until the year 2004, from which it has presented an increase in sources. of heat until the year 2010, which had 151,119 heat sources and decreasing until 2021, but this does not mean that the number of hectares burned has decreased, on the contrary, the sources of heat decreased but the number of hectares burned increased.

During the last 7 years, the largest forest burnings recorded in Bolivia have occurred. The increase in forest fires in Bolivia has risen drastically. According to the Ministry of the Environment and Water, during 2019 approximately 6 million hectares were burned in Bolivia.

Before 2000, 100,000 hectares per year were recorded as forest burning. In recent years the annual average is 3.7 million hectares per year according to. As a result, The product of this burning results in the emission of gasses, particulate matter, smoke, all of which are harmful to health and the cause of the increase in CO2, respective consequences.

The atmospheric infrared probe of NASA's water satellite collects data on infrared energy emitted from the earth to the atmosphere worldwide, the data from this probe are from methodological measurement centers, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory also contributes, thanks to these missions we have data available worldwide which facilitate the study of these emissions through a basic analysis of data we can visualize the increase in CO2 per year.

At a global level, the increase in CO2 between the years 2016-2022 was between 1 and 5% compared to previous years. The data provided by MacroDatos allows us to analyze CO2 emission data at the Bolivian level. Carrying out the same data analysis, the increase in CO2 between the years 2016-2022 was between 15 and 60% compared to previous years. All of this helps us understand the situation we are going through. It is notorious that in recent years there has been a greater increase in CO2 or carbon dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas whose origin can be both natural sources and human activity itself. Its consequences are very important both in the quality of the indoor air we breathe and in atmospheric pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases.

CONCLUSION

Climate change is a problem in Bolivia and in these last steps an increase was seen due to forest burning and a 1% increase in temperature as a result of this, air pollution also increased.

Space Agency Data

We use the CO2 data presented on the page:

https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/carbon-dioxide/

To perform a data analysis in python and visualize the CO2 increase per year and its percentage.

It inspired us to make an observation on the amount of CO2 released in different territories.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience as a team was very exciting and rewarding, as we combined our skills to produce a solid research and analysis for our project. As our first experience in this event, we learned that there is always room for one more in the team and that every idea is welcome. The source of inspiration for choosing our challenge was our own region.
