Climate change in the Amazon: Overview of the Tikuna and Kokama indigenous peoples in the city, Tefé

High-Level Project Summary

The level of deforestation has reached its limit and the consequences of the misuse of natural resources are worrying. To change this scenario it is necessary to raise awareness and act immediately, as there is no more time. In view of this, the Sepé Tiaraju team created a video, which demonstrates the consequences that were caused by man's lack of care for nature. We present actions that would be a solution to change this scenario, such as reforestation, the demarcation of indigenous areas so that they are protected and the use of renewable energies. This would be a way of making the general population aware of the importance of taking care of the planet we need to survive.

Detailed Project Description

First, we chose the challenge, followed by research on information that would clarify how global warming occurs. In articles that mention facts in general about Global Warming in the Amazon and on NASA's own page.

Then, we went to an indigenous community, that place is located in the city of Tefé, Amazonas, Brazil, where we interviewed a representative of the Kokama people. Since these peoples are formed by individuals who directly need their territories for their activities in general, their speech is essential.

In view of this, an interview was carried out in video format, in order to corroborate all the information collected.

Finally, we created a video containing the interviews and data collected and the solution of the problems presented above.

Space Agency Data

We use information from the NASA Space Agency website that reports data on fires and deforestation in the Amazon region, as well as images that demonstrate areas affected by human action. All this information collected was indispensable in the construction and idealization of the project that culminated in the creation of the challenge.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience was at first very challenging, given that we were participating for the first time in an event like this, however, it was amazing to work with colleagues/friends of our team Sepé Tiaraju and together with them to share the happiness of participating in Nasa Space Apps Challenge.

We have learned a lot about the main objective of the project, which is the issue of Global Warming. We work as a team and also acquire knowledge about different elements, such as new tools that we will be able to use in the future to create new projects.

All team participants live in the state of Amazonas, specifically in the city of Tefé, so we are in a city where is located in the Amazon state countryside, so we are faced daily with nature and the changes it causes. In view of this, when we are faced with the challenge that deals with climate change, we immediately choose it, because in addition to being an important topic, it is part of our reality.

This project has a qualitative character, as it intends to understand the relationships and what happens within a certain social group in relation to global warming and its consequences through the interpretation of the results of the video.

However, we used the video editing program and we had the help of our friend Silvio Zurra Coelho, an English teacher, since it was necessary to translate the video content.

Our first setback was the internet, because in the place where we are the internet is inconstant, with this, we are sometimes without access to the internet, we also had to move to get elements that were used in the creation of the video, besides, of course, the our time and energy to complete the challenge. However, none of the setbacks dampened our enthusiasm and energy for the construction and completion of the project.

We would like to thank all our mentors, Brenda Xavier, Ana Baruk and Demetrius for helping us; to Hudson who is our local leader, who helped us and always gave us a “pull on the ear”, also to Professor Silvio who helped us with the translation of the texts and to the indigenous peoples of the Tikuna and Kokama ethnicity of the Nova Esperança community, Barreira de Baixo, in the municipality of Tefé-AM.
