Saving the Lungs of the World

High-Level Project Summary

Today, climate change is undoubtedly one of the biggest problems we face. As a team from TED Bodrum College we have been using data from NASA, WWF and Greenpeace to develop this project to prevent climate change, protect the Amazon Rainforest and incorporate solar panels in our everyday lives. Since the research projects Geological Earth Mapping Experiments can survey critical minerals using advanced airborne imaging we aim to use this technology to observe the Amazon Rainforest.

Detailed Project Description

Since 1880 global temperature has risen 1,01 C. "Lungs of the World" aims to prevent temperatures from rising and reducing carbon footprint.

Our main goal is to shift the focus of the already existing project (Geological Earth Mapping Experiments) onto the Amazon Rainforest. Our new project “Lungs of the World” will monitor oxygen levels, mineral levels and water levels. This large scale project goes hand in hand with everyday tasks and small things starting with mindfulness.

As for the small scale project we will design a website to educate people on how NOT to use energy (water, electricity etc.) mindlessly because one person’s impact makes a bigger difference than you would think. Innovative things such as solar panels could be incorporated in everyday life, rainwater storage that is practiced in Brazil and China to reuse as filtered water to cut down on mass water usage could be brought into our lives too.

Space Agency Data

We have benefited from the Geological Earth Mapping Experiments, which have inspired us to form our project and gather information about other climate change projects.

These articles have helped us understand many problems and produce solutions. We would also like to thank reliable and eye opening sources like Greenpeace, NASA and WWF for allowing us to review their writing and inspire us with their work.

Hackathon Journey

First of all we would like to thank NASA for inspiring us, giving us a voice and providing the space to talk about climate change.

We believe climate change is one of the most important and time sensitive issues we are facing. As it a universal problem it has taught us how important it is to work as a team. We had a chance to understand the effects climate change can have in the long run. We also learned that everyones impact matters, no matter how small. Finally we learned how big an impact climate change has on our everyday life. We hope to make serious progress with our ideas and research in the name of protecting the environment and our world.

Finally we would like to thank our Biology teacher at TED Bodrum College, Ahmet Eren for providing us with the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Space Apps Challenge.
