Space Ship Struggles

High-Level Project Summary

We made a game where you play as an astronaut in a spaceship 100 years into the future. Run around the spaceship, look for documents (read them closely) and complete missions as you learn about the hazards of space operations and space travel. We believe it is important for people to learn in a way that will resonate with them.

Detailed Project Description

Play as an astronaut 100 years into the future on a spaceship. Navigate the spaceship looking for documents, searching for clues and completing missions while learning about the hazards of space operations and space travel.

The game educates the players on the dangers of space.

We used Swing from Java as our main programming software, we chose it because of our prior knowledge in it, and its soft learning curve. For version control software and collaboration, we used Git and GitHub; learning the software was difficult but through perseverance, we were able to handle it well. Lastly, we used the image manipulation program, GIMP, heavily; our prior experience helped us a lot, and we were able to achieve desirable results.

Space Agency Data

For data, we mainly relied on information sites by the Canadian Space Agency. Handling this data was akin to that of research done in school, however the new twist of using it in such a fashion was a fresh experience. In the future, we would like to use more traditional, raw data to create a more authentic experience, as well as to challenge ourselves.

Hackathon Journey

Our hackathon journey was fun and we learned a lot. We have never worked on project at this grand of a scale before. Learning how to code together at the same time was a unique challenge because of the time constraints. Having to learn version control software on the fly proved a difficult challenge.

Aside from that, putting so much time on the weekend for something that was not related to academics was foreign to us, but we enjoyed it a lot.

We approached this project wanting to have fun and learn a lot, we are happy to have done just that.

I would like to thank everyone at the Canadian Space Agency discord server who helped us a lot during the process, and made our experience as smooth as possible.
