Smart Blind Stick For Visually Impaired People to Detect Obstacles using Ultrasonic Sensor

High-Level Project Summary

In our project we will develop a tool which can serve as a blind stick being more helpful than the conventional one. The smart blind stick will guide the user to reach their destination without colliding with the obstacles. That is by using an ultrasonic sensor and water sensor in the blind stick . The instrument stands used to perceive the obstacles at the range of 100 centimeters and a water sensor which makes sure to avoid any water puddles on the way. It has an inbuilt buzzer and a vibration motor through which one can know when any obstacle is detected. The major sensory organ of a person is theireyes. Being blind in a world ,it means there will be multiple normal mishaps.

Detailed Project Description

The major sensory organ of a person is their eyes. One glimpse around us is enough to make us realize how visual is most of the information in our environment. Timetables in train stations, signs indicating the right way or potential danger, a billboard advertising a new product in the market, these are all the visual types of information we all come across in our daily life. Most of this information is inaccessible for the blind and the visually impaired. Being blind in a world suited for the sighted, it means there will be multiple normal mishaps. Stumbling upon an office chair that wasn’t neatly tucked under the desk or knocking a glass off the table because it was left right on the edge or falling down due to some other obstacles on the way. In our project, we proposed a solution for the blind people by using an ultrasonic sensor and water sensor in the blind stick. The instrument stands used to perceive the obstacles at the range of 100cm and it also detects any presence of water puddles and makes sure the user avoids any slippery surfaces, the buzzer which is placed in the smart stick gets activated and produces a sound when any obstacle or water puddles are detected. This proposed method uses the Arduino UNO as controller. The following hardware power supply, microcontroller (Arduino UNO), ultrasonic sensor, water sensor, buzzer and vibrating motor. Software we used is Arduino (IDE). It supports programming languages such as C & C++ we used C language in our project. we were motivated to develop a smart blind stick which will help in preventing the blind people from getting fallen into trouble.  The smart stick is of user friendly, quick response, very low power consumption, lighter weight and it is easy to hold.

Hackathon Journey

Our space app journey was very intresting we learned lot of things and developed lot of things . learned about different softwares and hardwares. We inspired to make this project be seeing our grand parents how difficult for them to walk roam outside so we thought to make a smart blind stick using the technology which will help in preventing the blindness from getting fallen into trouble. Our main motto is that everyone can afford .So, by using this platform we hope it may reach to many people and help them.
