Project StarWeather

High-Level Project Summary

Project StarWeather is a UI design for an application that functions similarly to a weather application. It employs three main pages that portrays Solar Activity, Earth inclusive planetary impact and the Hazard levels on Earth. Our project uses the public-comfortable weather app concept in this as well in order to make Space Weather easier to understand and interpret. Adding to that, the interface occasionally uses fact boxes to ensure proper understanding of the public about what they are seeing. An added benefit is that the application will be constantly updated using NASA and other Space Agency date, ensuring that faster and more accessible, real-time data is available to the public.

Detailed Project Description

Our Project: Simply

Project StarWeather is a User Interface (UI) designed for an application that functions similarly to a weather website. Viewers can navigate through the bar and access the data given by accessing the Project Submission. We used a simple interface in which the most important data for a day-to-day citizen is highlighted. This way, we further work towards our goal of creating an interactive tool that invites the public.

What sets us apart

Our project is unlike a typical space data application. We have combined our knowledge of designing and helio-astronomy with data resources to create a public-friendly application. The existing data sources require some expertise to interpret the data, and considering the 8-second attention span of a human, it isn't effective enough. Our usage of clear labels, clip art, and communicative colour usage ensures that enough data is absorbed by a person to retain a user to learn more. In addition, with our simple navigation, and condensation of data, a developed version of this could potentially be a one-stop destination for anyone seeking space weather data.

Benefits and Goals

Our main benefit is the added accessibility of space data. Another benefit that stems out of this is that through better public knowledge and interest in space weather, we see the potential for better development of the sector and more interest in "Solar Wind Proofing" technology. We aim to ensure everyone gets the latest Space Weather update easily and to aid crisis mitigation.

The concept is that, during an adverse event, all consenting users will be informed through the use of a notification as soon as data is recorded. This would immensely reduce the casualties and encourage immediate action. Furthermore, this would also be immensely helpful due to the real-time update: an option that press conferences and news articles don't have, which usually are the only source of information of this kind.

Added benefit is that, our application's Fact Boxes will ensure that users are well introduced about the data they are accessing. Plus, our description of how an adverse solar event look like includes extremely valuable information that would help uninformed users as well as general public if the Solar event disrupt communications, a very possible event.

The tools we used

We used the Canva platform to develop our UI design and all other related graphic creations.

Space Agency Data

Since our project in the current stage is unresponsive, we do not use real-time Space Agency data, but below are some data we used for inspiration, design or dummy data.

Hackathon Journey

At the beginning of the hackathon, we chose the challenge merely out of excitement, and we were lost... We had no idea what to do until we came across a real-world space weather data site. Then we began developing a design for our application until an idea struck, "How are we going to MAKE this?" Since we weren't experienced in coding languages, we were dumbstruck again, until we decided to submit a UI design. Then onwards, the hackathon began for us. The hackathon journey was like a crash course in teamwork. But in the end, we were all happy with the end result. The journey was tough and long, but the memories we made through it will last a lifetime.
