108 Deforestation Facts to Predict & Act

108 Deforestation Facts to Predict E Act

High-Level Project Summary

A platform that brings together data from various sources related to deforestation. There are data from three main sources: agriculture (which includes crop variations), climatic variations and detailed deforestation. We crosscheck all this data with artificial intelligence to be able to show in an easy, interactive and useful way (with maps and graphics) the resulting problems from deforestation in order to take better care of our environment and quality of life, and also to optimize our food production, since it is the main sector that moves the Brazilian economy.

Detailed Project Description

What exactly does it do?

Our Solution is a High Level Web Application via which oficial agents, NGOs and individuals can:

  • see data in an interactive, easy and useful way,
  • notify relevant authorities of deforestation,
  • predict future deforestation,
  • and act in advance with precision.

How does it work?

2.1) We grab data consisting of numerous satellite images and datasets, mostly from INPE - Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Brazilian Space Agency) and NASA.

2.2) We apply AI to collected data to find out:

  • where,
  • when, and
  • at what rate,

deforestation is growing.

2.3) We cross check the data to discover changes in:

  • humidity,
  • rains,
  • floods,
  • droughts, and
  • crops,

in other parts of the country.

What benefits does it have?

The Application will show predictions on maps of the Amazon Rainforest.

These predictions will show:

  • possible future areas of deforestation,
  • loss of wildlife,
  • crop loss,
  • consequent effects on the weather.

Furthermore, the Application connects local residents, workers and agents in the region with the world of agribusiness, also impacted negatively by deforestation.

What do you hope to achieve?

We hope to provide a useful and scalable high-level interface to act towards really protecting the Amazon rainforest and at the same time raise awareness among all involved parties and across society in general.

Space Agency Data

Our project uses data from the INPE - INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE PESQUISAS ESPACIAIS, partner of the space agency, consisting of historical sets of data recorded by the AQUA and SNPP satellites to monitor fires and deforestation.

We use data to build our future reports, projections and alerts on our platform.

Hackathon Journey

An epic experience, with an incredible and engaged team across different locations in Brazil, Uruguay and the UK.

This challenge was inspired by our concern for the environmental consequences of deforestation of the Amazon, affecting biodiversity, agribusiness, climate change and indigenous people.

Our approach was based on consolidated data that can be better analyzed to support and guide decision-making by governments, NGOs and the general population.

We found it difficult to locate an API or database with a friendly format; data for validation of historical records of deforestation and fires in the Amazon were in image format, so the Alteryx tool was used to read the data and perform the analysis.

We thank NASA, Space Apps and Stephanie Powell (language reviewer) for the unique opportunity to participate in this event.
