High-Level Project Summary
Anyone can use the argument of the low definition of images to discredit and even try to discredit information and scientific discoveries about deforestation and illegal land use in the Amazon.A famous and recent example was the clash between the former minister of the environment of Brazil and the former director of INPE about the magnitude of deforestation in the Amazon.The business value proposition is to provide a solid and irrefutable basis for decision-making involving the mapping of land use and occupation, exemplified by the preservation of forests.

Detailed Project Description
What problem did we decide to solve?
Nowadays, the solution for mapping deforestation in the Amazon, in Brazil, is made by a solution developed in 2003 by INPE (National Institute for Space Research), with the data and technologies available at the time. This INPE tool has a resolution of 900 m2 per pixel, which can cause an error in the interpretation of the data due to the low precision of the scale. Lay people can use the argument of the low definition of the images to discredit and even try to discredit information and scientific discoveries about deforestation and illegal land use in the Amazon. A famous and recent example was the clash between the former minister of the environment of Brazil and the former director of INPE about the magnitude of deforestation in the Amazon. We believe that a passionate idea combined with a technological solution is the fuel for the construction and execution of an incredible project, which can really make a positive difference on our planet!
What is the business/project value proposition?
The business value proposition is to provide a solid and irrefutable basis for decision-making involving the mapping of land use and occupation, exemplified by the preservation of forests. We will provide analysis, metrics and images based on the supervised classification of land use and occupation.
The current solution that monitors and makes available data from the Amazon Forest is PRODES, developed in 2003 by INPE (National Institute for Space Research), which provides a resolution of 900 m2 per pixel.
The current solution that monitors and makes available data from the Amazon Forest is PRODES, developed in 2003 by INPE (National Institute for Space Research), which provides a resolution of 900 m2 per pixel.
The product we developed has a spatial resolution that is 225 times more precise than the existing solution developed by INPE, that is, a resolution of up to 4 m2 per pixel.
The solution is based on open source code developed in C++ and Python, in the public domain on the Qgis Geographic Information System platform (free software, https://qgis.org/).
The services provided by our business may support, in addition to research on deforestation in forests, any type of study that requires information on land use and occupation, as we can highlight:
- Monitoring of cultivation areas by Financial Institutions and Insurance Companies in order to avoid agrarian insurance fraud;
- Monitoring of illegal mining areas;
- Aerial views of large areas of cultivation or livestock raising.
What is the viability of the business/project?
Here we will tell you how it will be and how we are thinking about the feasibility and sustainability points (economic, social and environmental) of your project economic. We analyze that the total size of the achievable market (TAM) in Brazil is R$ 75.64 million. We demonstrate below in a segmented way by market:
Preservation of the Amazon Forest
The Amazon fund for forest preservation between 2008 and 2018 was BRL 3.1 billion. Calculating that 1% of the value of this fund is destined to obtain technical data offered by our company, the TAM of the Amazon Forest preservation area would be R$ 3.1 million per year.

Agribusiness
Agribusiness in Brazil represents 27% of the National GDP, which is equivalent to R$1.98 trillion. We consider that the investment in remote monitoring would be 0.01% of revenue, that is, R$ 19 million. (source: https://cnabrasil.org.br/cna/panorama-do-agro )
Insurers
Rural business insurance presented, in the year, growth of 38.7% in relation to the first six months of 2021. Premiums collected until June 2022 reached the amount of R$ 5.66 billion. The rural insurance loss ratio was 76.3% in June this year, after the peak of 342.8% in January 2022. In the year, the rural insurance loss ratio was 160.9%. Considering the high rate of rural insurance fraud, which is widespread in the sector, we estimate that the Companies would invest up to 1% of their revenue to mitigate the loss from fraud, that is, R$50.6 million.

Governmental Entities
The budget of the Ministry of the Environment of Brazil has a budget of R$ 3.6 billion. (source: https://www.portaltransparencia.gov.br/orgaos-superiores/44000-ministerio-do-meio-ambiente). We estimate that 0.05% of this budget would be dedicated to the acquisition of analysis and remote sensing focused on land use and occupation, totaling R$ 1.8 million.
Scientific community
Brazil has approximately 294 thousand researchers. Of this total, 33,524 work in the area of Agricultural Sciences (11.4%), with 16,700 programs of research. (source: http://lattes.cnpq.br/web/dgp/censo-atual/ ). CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) has an annual budget of R$ 1 billion (source: https://www.portaltransparencia.gov.br/orgaos-superiores/24000-ministe

Hackathon Journey
NASA Hackathon journey was full of challenges, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment. In the process of project development, many challenges have been encountered. Fortunately, the encouragement of teammates and the enthusiasm to do our best for the earth inspire us to face the challenge. When the project development is completed, we are extremely excited about de DEI'S ability to make the earth a better place.
