Wind turbine driven spring

High-Level Project Summary

Our solution is creative, as it will never strike in someone's mind (probably). We developed big clock mechanism, that is connected to DC generator. It will fully extend after about 2 hours (300 gram 38 cm3 spring). We can add more spring to get more energy. Spring mechanism should be connected do small wind turbine, which will have break, so it will not always shrink the spring. Spring could be made out of steel or any other strong substance.

Detailed Project Description

What do you think do clock and Venus probe have in common?

Probably those are the most different things that have ever been created, but they still have something in common.

It’s strange, but it’s string.

We need to shrink the string on earth and hold it by locker, so it won’t open in space.

String stats? It’s gonna last for about 6 hours.

We’re gonna use deadly Venusian wind.

We are gonna take spring, put it on one end of metal rod, but on the other end, we’re gonna place small wind turbine.

Note-wind turbine must be small and strong, else it’s gonna be destroyed by Venusian winds.

Spring is gonna work like a battery. As you know, while you shrink the spring, it stores energy. This method was used in mechanical clocks. Now, we’re gonna use the same spring, but on bigger scale.

We’re gonna put it on the metal rod, which will be connected to DC generator. Whilst you release the spring (note-not very fast), the metal rod must spin, which itself will make copper cables, that are inside of motor to spin, which in turn will create electricity.

Wind turbine must be placed on the other end of metal rod. It will spin, indefinitely, but we are gonna use It for short amount of time, just to shrink spring every time it’s gonna open.

For flexible work and not needing to always shut down while charging, twice the amount of spring is recommended.

Space Agency Data

We've used data from NASA (e.g https://techport.nasa.gov/view/92914). We've also used data for wind turbines from various websites (e.g https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/10854/would-it-be-feasible-to-use-wind-turbines-on-venus). But mostly the project is done by our calculations.

Hackathon Journey

It was very inspiring challenge, as it posed a lot of problems, but with the help of our local teachers and parents we were able to overcome the challenge. But still, mentors were probably rigged, as only website ideas won, and our project, which had 3d animation and detailed view of everything lost.

References

We mainly used our calculations. We haven't used many resources. https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/10854/would-it-be-feasible-to-use-wind-turbines-on-venus - we used this page to get some information about wind turbines, but still, we got information from our teachers.
