Rover Marathon on Venus

High-Level Project Summary

Venus is Earth's sister star, its climate is runaway greenhouse effect ,90% of sunlight is reflected by its atmosphere. The probe (Day) in the previous Pioneer Venus program only worked for 45 minutes after landing. The energy storage system design by us is almost unaffected by the high temperature of Venus. It is mainly composed by fan, generator-motor and a flywheel. The carbon sulfide is used as the container of the flywheel to withstand the high pressure of Venus ,the fan keeps charging the flywheel. There will be two sets of systems inside, the volume is about the size of a small car.

Detailed Project Description


WHAT IS THIS?


EEPS(EXTREME ENVIRONMENT POWER SYSTEM) is a system that can solve the problem the all human are facing when exploring now as the electricity problem. EEPS is strong corrosion resistance, strong resistance to high pressure and strong high temperature resistance. About this system, fan generate electricity using the wind energy and pass the electricity to charge the capacitor. When the capacitor is charged completely, it will tranfer the electricity to the generator motor and the generator motor will start to make the fly wheel start working. After that, the fly wheel will begins to store the power that the rover need.



IMPORTANT PART OF THIS SYSTEM:FANS:

Venus has strong wind climate. So, why dont we hold this chance? We use fans to generate the electricty for our rover . We use titanium alloy as the material to design our fans' blades. Besides that, we also use a filter to cover our fans to avoid the objects got stuck between the blades.



CAPACITOR:

The capacitor we use is the solid capacitor. The surface of this capacitor is using sulfyrized carbyne. With this type material shiled, we can make sure it can be protected well and can work well at the environment like venus.



FLY WHEEL:

Fly wheel is a good solution to overcome the power storage problem. With the formula, we know that faster the spinning speed, we can get more energy as there is a square proportional relationship between rotational speed and stored energy. About the surface, we use a shield made sulfurized carbyne to cover our fly wheel, magnetic bearing and generator motor to make sure they can work well in the high temperature, high pressure and highly corrosive environment like Venus. Inside the shield, the pressure close to vacuum, that also is a key to make sure our device work well.

This challenge makes all of our team members all together.All we learn in this challenge not only just the knowledge but also let us realized the power of teamwork.Throughout this challenge,one of the hardest challenge is to make some teamates more active,but luckily we have overcome this problem.Whatever we not good at physics but with the information provided, we are trying to make our challenge more comprehensive.Overall,no matter we win or not,we still happy the things we learn in this challenge.


WHAT INSPIRED WE TO CHOOSE THIS CHALLENGE?

As we are young, everytime we look at star, we always wonder did that have a same people like us in the star we looking at is currently watching the unknown sky. So, the exploration to the unknown space is always the thing we want to do. Venus in our language is “金星”, its direct translation is “GOLD STAR” and we always thinks there have many gold in that planet. Because of this, Venus always have a special position in our heart.
