Poster constructor

High-Level Project Summary

We have created a constructor that allows editing and drawing up real images made by satellites that perform different missions, along with aesthetically and efficiently visualizing metadata and graphics for the final template. We use R, G, B photo materials from the JunoCam website and upload them to our database. The poster generator app can combine three-channel images into standard color output. The web application creates a poster template filled with data that the user chooses (a photo of the red, blue, or green channels, or a combined one, as well as real metadata from a satellite image).Users can immediately save the poster in the selected size and format for printing.

Detailed Project Description

1. The idea of the project is created to meet the needs of the target audience.

2. Target audience:

  • Teenagers with an interest in space topics who are willing to decorate their room with a poster of celestial bodies.
  • Journalists and mass media that have a necessity for outstanding visual materials for the articles and posts.
  • Scientists who want to make the appearance of their workspace more appealing and diverse.
  • Youth-oriented organizations that spread science through exhibitions and social media.

3. Problems to solve:

  • A lack of free high-quality posters on the Internet.
  • Available pictures are often artistically processed and distorted, because of the neglect of the real data. Thus, the posters become anti-scientific products.
  • Absence of the opportunity to choose the poster`s style with the theme of interest.
  • The correct poster printing requires knowledge of the preparation and process of printing. In case of deficiency of professional skills - a printed poster is low-grade.

4. Solution:

Creating a constructor that allows editing and drawing up real images made by satellites that perform different missions, along with aesthetically and efficiently visualizing metadata and graphics for the final template.

5. How does it work:

  • The user visits the website of the poster constructor.
  • Selects one of the active space missions he/she is interested in.
  • Chooses an image fitting their purposes.
  • Adjusts the color scale of the image based on their preferences (or the preferences of its audience if it is mass media and youth organizations) or according to the interior of the place where the poster will be used.
  • Selects the desired type of poster from the variety of proposed templates.
  • Sets the print characteristics such as size and paper type. At this stage, the user can apply the function of preview to check how the poster will look on the wall or other objects (doors, cabinets, etc.).
  • The constructor engine sets the selected print settings and automatically saves the file, which can be sent to the printing house later.

Technical details:

We use R, G, B photo materials from the JunoCam website and upload them to our database. The poster generator app can combine three-channel images into standard color output.

Frontend part. The web application creates a poster template filled with data that the user chooses (a photo of the red, blue, or green channels, or a combined one, as well as real metadata from a satellite image).

Users can immediately save the poster in the selected size and format for printing.

6. Further project developing steps:

  • To create more than 100 unique poster templates. To implement this function we plan to collaborate with Ukrainian designers.
  • To add the function of design development for clothes, shoppers, etc. by using real images of celestial bodies and metadata to the constructor.
  • To launch a charity campaign to sell the best posters through an auction.
  • To direct the raised money to the fund in charge of the Ukrainian infrastructure restoring.

Hackathon Journey

During this hackathon, we gained invaluable experience working with short deadlines during which we had to make an MVP. We had time to go through many different ideas and settle on the one we liked the most. We formalized the design of our website in Figma, and created a website with a connection to the server. We managed to combine the RBG channels into standard color output and allow the user to download it to print a poster.

Every team member learned about how to create and develop a project strategy with further implementation of it.

It was a great team work with brainstorming and communication.

We were inspired by the Jovian Vortex Hunter project and believe that people can help the science.
