Spaceport Mars

High-Level Project Summary

Spaceport Mars is an empty pre-constructed habitat that is to be outfitted with the use of three 3D printers. The 3 printers consists of a metal 3D printer, plastic 3D printer and concrete 3D printer. The Spaceport Mars solution is described in a PowerPoint presentation at the www.SpaceportMars.com link and identifies tools, furniture and other items that would allow an astronaut to survive during their 1 year mission.

Detailed Project Description

Spaceport Mars is an empty pre-constructed habitat that is to be outfitted with the use of three 3D printers. The 3 printers consists of a metal 3D printer, plastic 3D printer and concrete 3D printer. The Spaceport Mars solution is described in a PowerPoint presentation at the www.SpaceportMars.com link and identifies tools, furniture and other items that would allow an astronaut to survive during their 1 year mission.

Space Agency Data

We used recommendations provided in the NASA report "Deep Space Habitability Design Guidelines Based on the NASA NextSTEP Phase 2 Ground Test Program" to identify tools and furniture that would be useful for Spaceport Mars.

Hackathon Journey

We enjoyed the Space Apps experience. It provided a project with a bounded deadline to begin the formalization of ideas to solve a specific challenge. We learned about current analogs and thought about how astronauts would survive with sparse resources to create a closed-system for survival. We approached this challenge by understanding the problem, identifying the available resources and iterating through solutions to deliver a Minimum Viable Product.
