Marsatia Habitat

High-Level Project Summary

We have designed a habitat that can survive the harsh conditions of Mars. Our habitat is also designed to be self-sustainable and uses In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU).It provides extra living space, Skylight, A bubble-like shell, fertile soil, breathable air, and Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS).All the ISRU systems are put underground for safety and security purposes.

Detailed Project Description

Marsatia Habitat:

We have designed a habitat that can survive the harsh conditions of Mars. Our habitat is also designed to be self-sustainable and uses In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU).

It is completely customizable as per the needs of Colonists. It is 3D printed with Martian regolith reducing its cost.

It can be created, made, and designed anywhere on any planet making it portable.

So here we have a carbon dioxide centrifuge that harvests the carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere. Then it goes to a carbon dioxide electrolysis chamber wherein the carbon is removed out of the carbon dioxide with the help of the electrolysis process which heats up to the gas to do the same. Then the remaining oxygen is sent to the mars base wherein it can be used to supply oxygen and it is also liquefied to be used for launching rockets. Then to make liquid methane. There is the carbon or soot that is left behind from the CO2 or carbon dioxide electrolysis through which the carbon and the hydrogen go through the suburbs reactions wherein they both mix together as a new chemical compound.

In this case, it is methane or CH4 is liquefied to be used on methane rockets. There's the Thorium reactor, which generates power and energy for the Mars Base, for the environment, control and life support system(ECLSS) of the mars base to provide electricity as well as it is connected to a power bank so that it can store excess power that is left behind from the generation of electricity. There's also an elevator for human use so that the maintenance crew can go to any of the levels to check the tanks and reactor and other components.

Habitat

The Habitat is inside a radiation-protected bubble-like transparent structure where the colonist can move freely without a space suit.

Power

The underground nuclear power plant will generate power and give it to the martian colony.

The power bank which is also placed underground will store excess power and act as a backup.

Air

For generating oxygen (O2), electrolysis is used to remove the carbon molecule (C) from the Carbon Dioxide Molecule (CO2) leaving the oxygen molecule (O2). However, Nitrogen is brought from earth.

Water

Water (H2O) is generated by purifying waste water and urine. It is purified and cleaned with the help of Ozone (O3) to make the water (H2O) drinkable.

Space Agency Data

The Data collected for NASA's Mars Habitat 3D Print Challenge's winner AI Space Factory's MARSHA habitat, it's materials capabilities and structure.

Hackathon Journey

This is the first ever time I have participated in this hackathon. The format is very exciting and wonderful.

I have learned a lot while doing the research for completing my project.

Thanks to the GO-team, Navigators and SMEs for their help and support.

I am thankful AARUUSH CHENNAI team for accepting me as a member of the team - "Becoming Martians" and guiding me throughout the Challenge.

It was a great experience being a part of this Global Challenge.

I am very excited to see the results.
