Solutions for Mars

High-Level Project Summary

Our team developed some solutions for the astronaut who needs to live for a year on Mars. We found a solution for the broken rover wheel, and some other solutions for tools and things the astronaut may need.We found solutions for the challenge using the resources found on the Mars atmosphere, and the three 3D printers. Our solutions have adopted the concept of using multi purpose parts that can be used in various types of tools. For the rover wheel, our team developed a design that facilitates the replacement and maintenance, based on reprinting single parts. This means that if one part is damaged, it can be replaced alone, instead of replacing all the wheel.

Detailed Project Description

Our project details various types of designs that make it possible that an astronaut on Mars can have enough tools to live comfortably during the expedition. The project works in a very simple way: print everything the astronaut may need for daily use such as toothbrush, forks, spons, knives and much more tools needed for Mars exploration.

With our project, we hope that astronauts can live on Mars in a way very similar to the one found on earth, with enough confort.

We used tools like Coreldraw and tinkercad to develop our project, such as various types of articles and databases.

Space Agency Data

Our team used information from NASA's database and the resources given for the challenge. For example, we used the information about the NASA CHAPEA to understand more about the type of habitat the astronaut will have on Mars, like its size and the things that the habitat contains.

The selection of materials used for the wheel was also influenced by the data provided by NASA's database.

But NASA's database wasn't the only open data our team used. We used the data about the Mars terrain in the article provided by the Canadian Space Agency, which inspired our wheel designs.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience with Space Apps was very interesting and challenging. We learned various abilities, such as 3D drawing and a way to make our team work very well, each one of us doing a fundamental part of the project.

We were inspired to choose this challenge because it was very challenging, since none of us in the team were designers. So, for us, designing a wheel solution for a Mars rover was a very interesting and challenging thing to do.

Our approach to develop this project was to think that our team was a company that finds solutions everywhere, even if its on Mars. All the project was a challenge, so our team just tried to find the best solutions in each part of the project.

We would like to thank the Space Apps Challenge for the experience, such as making it possible for our team to find one another, because we met just at the beginning of the challenge.
