Survive outside the Earth

High-Level Project Summary

Because the importance of the exploration of the astronomy for the humankind we try to make tools and objects the astronaut can survive with for a year. Mars is the most suitable planet that we can try to live in .The main tools that will be needed is 1.a furniture that doesn’t need a lot of space because of the small area that he will live in (2*2*2)2.a fixation tools that doesn’t take a lot of materials or space 3.sports tools, we observed that the gravity in Mars is 38% of earth gravity so if he doesn’t do sports and return to earth, he will not be able to live normally on the earth

Detailed Project Description

Our project aimed to help the astronaut live on marts for a year, we hope the astronauts could collect information about mars, study how mars first started millions of years ago and make a full 3d map of the mars ground and study the properties of the rocks and geology of its center so that our tools will be able to improve the quality of the work on mars. The project is designing tools classified as fixing, furniture, and fitness tools

Fitness tools are bar and dumbbell. According to the low gravity of mars compared to the earth. You should warm your muscles to keep them healthy. So that we designed the bar tool in small parts that will be connected by rolling every part into the next part until getting the full 1 m bar to warm. we designed a dumbbell that consists of one metal cylinder that connects two weights, each one on a different side, and the weight can be changed according to your need

This tool will be printed by the metal printer

The fixing tools are (the Plier tool, and toolbox). As the astronaut has to fix and recover the space shuttle and the rover explorer he needs good equipment to help him, but the problem is that the material on mars is limited. So that we designed a plier to grip small objects, bend and cut wires and we made the gripper bigger to do more force on the objects according to the (distance * force = distance * force) law and to make the plier easier to use. Also, we added a special plot that made the plier able to do more 6 jobs of more 6 tools to save the limited metal material. This tool will be printed by a metal and plastic printer. The next fixing tool is the toolbox. We found from our search that the astronaut on mars needs to explore the area where he lives, so he will need special tools to complete this mission like a toolbox which is made of plastic with a high hardness will give storage space to these tools with 4 rooms made of plastic. This tool will be printed from the metal printer and plastic printer, the plastic is made of virgin polypropylene (PP)

The first Furniture tool has been designed to include more than one job to save more space in your small habitat, so it is composed of many parts:

1-     The first part is the case of our tool that is designed like a desk and has free space to contain a small fridge and small microwave and other food retirements because the journey on mars will take one year. And the astronaut can use it as a dining table or work on that desk.

2-     The second part is the upper bed which is supported by a ladder and is about 180 cm long bed where he can sleep

3-     In the last part on the other side of the tool, there are three pegs to handle the astronaut suit to keep the suit safe

The ladder will be printed into small parts and all parts will be collected together. The base body including the desk and the bed will be printed by the concrete printer. The final part is the pegs that will be printed by the metal printer. Plastic is made of uPVC .The next furniture tool is the spoon-fork tool:

This tool is designed by integrating the fork and the spoon. A simple spoon that is connected with the fork arms at the end of the spoon. The tool will be printed by a metal printer.

at the same time astronaut needs to do more experiments on the rocks on mars with more technical devices in their habitat because mars were filled with a lot of volcanic magma that got cold and made the base rock on mars (basalt) which is very hard, so he will need pickaxe or lever that could be collected by the bar and our toolbox will store the sample on any room of the four rooms

all tools were designed by blender

Space Agency Data

NASA open resource: 'When steered, the wheel's unique shape bears the load continuously from inside to outside and prevents it from riding up on its outside edge' which helps me to create a tire shape for my rover wheel in which the crown shape converts the load from inside to outside; so it has high durability and a long life span.

NASA open resource: it inspired us to create the fixation tools which include screwdrivers and a plier

it also inspired us to make the tool box with a very good design

Hackathon Journey

In the first day of the space apps we meet many people and a wonderful speaker who began with an introduction about NASA and this competition, then we began the first session. it was good and we make lots of friends from different governments and educations and that was amazing mixture of people with high diversity and thinking ways.

We also know more about the space and the space challenges specifically Mars challenges of supplies.

We learnt how importance of living in another planet like Mars, also we learnt how to design 3D designs in different programs as blender and max 3d .

Our team love the Mars challenges although it was hard but we are interested in the Mars journeys from the first journey in 1964, and we choose the 3D design as we will share an amazing thing that might be applied in the mars and our names runs to Mars as the heroes in our small ages. In the two hackathon days NASA put us in a high strength that make us work academically about 14 hour with only three breaks that make us more depended and stronger in our future life .

NASA website supported us with essentially official trusted information that we use in our solution .

If we have more time we would code an Arduino board with a speaker to simulate a partner to talk with.

NASA space apps challenges and competition was one of the most great trials and experiences that we have in this academic and social year.
