Mars Survival Tour

High-Level Project Summary

Our group have developed a few tools and furniture such as screwdriver, concrete table, spork and other utensils using Blender to assist our living on Mars for 1 year. Surviving on Mars for a year is truly a tough mission, but with the help of these tools and utensils, it makes our life easier. All those tools are important for the astronauts to conduct their daily activities on Mars as well as repairing all the broken appliances needed.

Detailed Project Description

We have built up some tools like plastic bowl, plastic cup, plastic chair, plastic ruler, plastic kitchen cabinet, metal cup, concrete table, screwdriver, wheel and spork. We use Blender to make these 3D models which enable us to survive on Mars for 1 year.

Concrete table and plastic chair are the main furniture for the astronauts. As they are multifunction, they can used as dining table as well as writing desk. Astronaut can do their daily jobs such as conduct science experiment or doing science research on this concrete table. On the other hand, screwdriver and plastic ruler are accustomed to fix the broken appliances as well as measure the actual length of the appliances for better repairment. Plastic kitchen cabinet is habituated to place storage of food, cooking equipment, and often silverware and dishes for table service. Plastic bowl is used to hold food for eating while spork, the combination of spoon and fork is used as eating utensils. Plastic cup is used to fetch beverages for drinking. Through these tools, I hope this can create a better living environment for the astronaut.

Space Agency Data

We made extensive use of the NASA 3D resources library (https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/), which provided 3D models for us to do as a reference when we are modelling the tools needed for the astronaut to live on Mars for 1 year. These allowed us to make our models relevant to real-world scientists.

We also used a 3D modelling app which is Blender(https://www.blender.org/) with the help of BlenderKit(https://www.blenderkit.com/asset-gallery?query=category_subtree:model%20order:-created).

Hackathon Journey

We had an amazing time completing the SpaceApps challenge this year. All of us approached the problem with no experience with 3D modelling at all, and we all discovered the joy in it while building up something for a very important project! While we all worked on different parts, it was really satisfying reaching the end when we finally got our platform to produce fantastic results. We have learned a lot both about 3D modelling but also about working in a team to produce high quality of 3D model in a short length of time! After all, we would like to thank NASA for giving us this tremendous opportunity to display our talent in this contest.
