OUTFITTING A MARS HABITAT: A 3D PRINT CHALLENGE BY SPACE SHARKS

High-Level Project Summary

Using assembly techniques, we solved the "broken wheel" challenge by modeling 48 pieces to assembly a wheel without using a tire, 24 links between, 1 ring to put our own designed beams and screws, in the model we made a direction path ,so the record and crew involved in future investigations just as us in mars, know the direction of the rover and making the functions of the wheel infallible. Following, same assembly techniques where used to model a construction brick, stackable boxes and beams for the needs tha can emerge during the stay in mars knowing that the concrete printer is outside the facility. Furniture with basis of modeling and a multipurpose handle for tools and cutlery.

Detailed Project Description

The wheel was designed considering that there is scarcity of metal, and the better material to create a new wheel, was plastic, also for the size of the plastic printer, the design consider a form to assemble 22 part to complete the wheel.

Most of the tool and extra items where thinked to be used for mutipurposes tasks.

The beneficts is that mostly of the items designed are able to be printed by the 3 printer

It was used SolidWorks for the development and design for all the items, including the Rober wheel

All the parts submited to the challenge, where modified to open an STL reader and print, from the bottom to the upper part.

Every part was made contemplating the measurements of the printers.

The links, beams, and rings, were made with the purpose of structural gain and be printed in metal

Space Agency Data

arc.nasa.gov

We use most of the data from this site, due to all the 3D designs to think usefull and the easiest form to design and the webpage: https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/spacecraft/rover/wheels/

to check the measurements of the wheel to base our modeling.

Hackathon Journey

we learn that exist tons of information, totally free and open sources softwares, encouraging to all the people to use in the better way to create and design thing. We were surprised of all the competent people that we have met, it was a fun, interesting and enriching experience that we want to have again.
