To Mars and beyond

High-Level Project Summary

We developed various tools and furniture to improve our quality of life on Mars. These tools vary from one another in terms of purpose and sometimes serve multiple at once. We made sure to cram as many purposes into each tool as possible, as advised by the description of our challenge. These tools allow for construction, harvesting, maintenance and keeping the body active, preventing the muscles and bones from melting because of the 66.6% less gravity on Mars. Besides these tools, we have designed an agricultural block to allow for the production of produce, allowing the residents of this habitat to remain well-fed with healthy vegetables and fruits. This farm block connects to the habitat.

Detailed Project Description

To enhance the standard of living on Mars, our group created a fair variety of tools and furniture. These instruments have several functions, and occasionally they perform several at once. The description of our task instructed us to pack as many functions as we could into each tool. Due to the 66.6% lower gravity on Mars, these tools allow for building, harvesting, maintenance, and keeping the body active. This prevents the muscles and bones from melting. In addition to these technologies, we have created an agricultural block to enable the production of produce, ensuring that the occupants of this habitat are well-fed with nutritious fruits and vegetables. The habitat is connected to this agricultural block via. a tunnel. The resident responsible for harvesting trains their body by going back and forth through this tunnel, carrying harvested goods, despite this practice's inefficiency (it is an acceptable compromise).

Space Agency Data

We have used a mixture of open data and data from NASA's publicly available archives related to our topic.

Hackathon Journey

Firstly, we are all incredibly grateful for an opportunity as such. We had an amazing time creating our project and socializing with other competitors. Our first day started off with a seminar and was followed by every group settling down at their tables. We immediately started working on our projects. After deciding on the products and furniture we are going to design as a group, 2 people started working on the design and the other two did the required research. At some times throughout the day between our study sessions we took little breaks admiring the university and socializing for more productivity and efficiency.

For a tighter grasp on the idea of the project the night of the first day we watched The Martian and read articles about life on Mars.

Our second day required fairly less work. We were focused mostly on agriculture and tools.
