The Credibility of Science News.

High-Level Project Summary

Nowadays, one of the main problems in the science area is the misrepresentation of science news, which are being manipulated by communication mediums in order to enchant people to read their news. Through the years, the concept of Open Science has been promoted, many metrics have permitted to make available science knowledge, but how trustful is this information? Our project consists of creating a software that works as a filter of reliable information. This software evaluates the scientific content of a scientific text, essay or research. This project is important to Open Science because permits that the sharing information be trustful, in this way, society can avoid fall in fake knowledge.

Detailed Project Description

Provide additional details about your project. What exactly does it do? How does it work? What benefits does it have? What do you hope to achieve? What tools, coding languages, hardware, or software did you use to develop your project?

Our project is an Information Filter Software (IFS). This software allows the user to enter a URL of a website, blog or scientific journal, subsequently, it downloads the information and begins the filter process.

The first filter consists of take the title of the news and make a match with a database of websites or scientific journals previously verified. After this search, it shows others scientific documents in the database related to the topic of this information.

The software allows make click upon each paragraph of the information and shows similarities with other paragraph, sentences or statements extracted from these scientific documents, through keywords.

If the software shows that the information has literacy coincidence with one or more of the paragraphs of the matching results, it proceeds to make the second filter.

The second filter consists of review the references that the news has, making sure not to be a plagiarism. If the software detects the plagiarism, it shows a warning alert.

The purpose of this second filter is to make sure that the information is completely reliable.

The main benefit of this software is to be possible to access to information through Open Science in a reliable way.

We hope to the society do not continue being influenced with misrepresented information.

Unfortunately, society has been influenced by misrepresented information and fake news, causing that they believe in some things that are completely wrong, for example, vaccines are dangerous or COVID 19 does not exists. Science development also has been affected by this bad information, that is why we want to make reliable the science news and discoveries.

In order to create the software, we used Code language, JavaScript, nodejs and other languages as HTML, CCS. We also used Jquery, Puppeteer, Express. Our project was saved in GitHub.

Space Agency Data

Our project was mainly inspired by the book “Open Science by Design: Realizing a Vision for 21st Century Research” published by National Academies Press. This book tries to expose and explain the metamorphosis that science is living through nowadays, why it is essential to make open science, main benefits, and barriers to doing so. One of the main topics is why and how the digital revolution has greatly increased the possibilities of doing open science the new norm and lowered its cost. This book provided us with a lot of useful information on how open science is actually structured and helped us to identify a structural problem related to the taxonomy of open science, specifically with the scientific tools because these contemplate only some very specific sources that are not common for most non-scientists.

Hackathon Journey

One of the reasons which we decided to enroll in Space Apps Challenge was to live the experience of develop our ideas about a problematic, we collaborated in a fun way, and this allowed us to know people and share our ideas. Our team were inspired of working in this challenge because we are all uncomfortable with the misrepresentation of science news. The objective of the challenge is to create a metric to evaluate the effectiveness of Open Science, and we developed ideas in order to make the science news a good way of learning, avoiding the fake information given by some communicative mediums. We searched for a solution to this problematic, creating a software that be able to filter fake information through reliable websites references.
