Make a Moonquake Map!

High-Level Project Summary

We worked on a web application which visualize the moonquakes data on a 3d moon globe. The website also offers the possibility to visualize plots in each seismic area of the moon.We were asked to create a moon map and that’s what our platform does and more! Our role here is to make this data accessible to people who want to visualize it, learn more about the quakes on the moon and explore what may happen if a moonquake happens.

Detailed Project Description

Our mission was to develop an app that plots the seismic events detected by the EASEP and ALSEP instruments on an interactive 3-D digital moon globe. So we created a web application that displays a 3d moon globe in an interactive and user friendly way, the data given about the moosquakes was represented as active points on the globe with 4 colors ( red, bleu, yellow and green) to represent the different types of the moosquakes cause according to researchs there is about 4 types of seismic activity on the moon.  Our website gives users the possibility to explore the Apollo experiences that happened between the year 1962 and 1992, so anyone can have a global representation about the seismic events in each year, moreover they can have plots representation about each seismic activity with more information about its type, magnitude and causes.

Through our website you can also explore the history of the extraordinary Apollo experiments easily, so anyone can read about the moon exploration without the hassle of searching through the internet. And along this we visualized plots about the relation of the tidal stress caused by the moon with  the earthquakes.

One last thing, any informative website could be boring for some people but ours is different. We integrated a guessing game, where we give the player funny images generated by an Artificial intelligence on the moon and he tries to figure out the meaning of the image.

Space Agency Data

For the data  we used the Apollo Passive Seismic Experiment Expanded Event  data provided by NASA to localize every seismic activity on the moon’s globe with its type ,time, depth and other  information about the seismic event .

We used an external dataset, the "Significant Earthquakes, 1965-2016", To study the effect of the moon on causing earthquakes the same way that the earth is possibly causing moonquakes.

Hackathon Journey

Two days without sleep, and 48 hours of focus, hard work and non stop learning about the moon and astronomy.

Coming up with a good idea is not easy, coming up with a winning idea is even more difficult. We spent quite a lot of time brainstorming and we all agreed to work on something new and exciting to learn new things during this journey so we picked the moonquakes challenge.

We started  by exploring the data and try to understand maximum of it it was quite difficult due to the new terminology and symbols but we dealt with it by reading a ton of scientific articles about the matter, just after that we tackled the technical side to build our solution and include all the features that we believed would make a unique one.
