Moon Quake: An opportunity to explore

High-Level Project Summary

Soma Chasers is a project which aims the reach of technical knowledge about the moon quakes to the common community. We have envisioned and plotted the classified data done by Nakamura and others from the ALSEP resources. We have made a 3D model for the same so that people can interact with that and understand the moon quakes from an easier point of view. Besides the data has been made easily accessible to the general community by hosting it on the open source platform.

Detailed Project Description

-SOMACHASER! ITS VISION AND WAY

To start with, this project aims at developing an easy visualisation of the moon quakes. Here anybody can get an overview of the positions of the moon quakes that occurred during the period of 1969-77.

Background:

Talking about its background, the data was collected by ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package). This data was not easily understood by the general community, as it took almost four gruesome years to get a grasp of it. Scientist Nakamura tried to understand it by analysing the data and compiling it in a relatively easier format.

Tech-Stack:

It reads JSON data files and uses the global library to visualise on moon globe element. Mainly we worked on Github, react js, spreadsheets, visual code, HTML, and CSS. Using globe.gl we precisely plot latitude and longitude on a 3D sphere. Our website is lite and interactive. In the future, scientists may use it to visualise any moon-specific data and make it globally available.

We also used NASA PDS i.e. planetary data system as a data source. Also, a scientific visualisation studio computer-generated imagery CGI moon kit was used for the wrapping of the images.

Globe.gl:

It is a library based on three.js. It is used for the making of 3D globes. This library made the crux of our project as we used it for the animation used for the moon.

Working:

Global.GL makes a globe object which has latitude and longitude. We have made a data file .json which has an analysis of ALSEP data and contains coordinates, classification, depth and time of moon quakes. On our website in the background reads that JSON file background and plots that on the global object,.

Space Agency Data

We used data provided by

  1. JAXA
  2. NASA

Hackathon Journey

It was a journey full of adventures and learning. We got to learn a plethora of information about the moon quakes and their relations with a depth of epicenter.
