Terra Observari

High-Level Project Summary

An interactive timeline of earth-observing missions carried out by NASA and its partners, presented in a modern, eye-catching and stylish way. Our website, built with modular design and potential expansion in mind, features overviews of defining programs, such as GOES and Pioneer, with each program being presented as a separate timeline. Within the timeline for a specific program, milestone satellites are highlighted and are clickable, allowing the user to learn more about them.

Detailed Project Description

Our project website is lovingly hand-written in HTML and styled with CSS. We decided against using website builders to make sure we control every aspect of our project and to make it as modular as possible since the exploration of our planet from space never ceases and future missions will have to be included into our timeline. The project is structured as one main timeline and a simpler timeline for every mission, accessible from the main page. We incorporated a lot of hover elements to keep the user engaged. Simple, educational language was used to make the project accessible to everyone.

The program timeline feature every satellite launched within that program, but, not to overwhelm the user, only the defining missions of the programs can be expanded upon. Due to time constraints, we managed to pick just one defining satellite for every program we wrote about, but that number can be increased to 4 or 5 per program in the future.

A defining feature of our project is our innovative aesthetic. We decided to use pixel art as key visuals for our project to give it an aesthetic that is simultaneously modern and retro. Each program is presented by a pixel art depiction of one of the satellites in it on the main timeline.

Space Agency Data

Using NASA Agency’s data had various advantages for us, including:

  • Gaining an in-depth understanding of the functioning of NASA’s various satellite missions, which was vital for our project
  • Comprehending the history and development of NASA’s satellite missions and how they have evolved and advanced since NASA’s first satellite mission, the Pioneer series
  • The ways in which NASA’s Earth observing missions are instrumental in tackling the issues of our time, such as the destruction of the ozone layer, through the data they have collected and continue to collect
  • It also inspired us to further study NASA’s satellite missions and the benefits they have for humanity and the environment

Hackathon Journey

Our team proved to be very capable and productive in the face of deadlines and time constraints. We had a ton of fun at our local location, IMS School in Limassol, and we would like to thank our awesome Local Leads and every organizer of this event.

We divided our roles efficiently, with Yury and Yulia focusing on research and Sofya and Bogdan working on writing the code for the website and creating graphics for it, respectively. That proved to be a huge help, as we could collaborate but everyone had their own role.
