Eyes on the Earth

High-Level Project Summary

Our project aims to simplify the task of educating the society about NASA's Earth Observation Missions right from a Kindergarten child to a senior citizen by simplifying the process and providing interactive multimedia to keep the audience engaged. We depict how the mission set evolved over past 7 decades systematically by using GUI and Web Development to educate people about the latest technological developments. We did this by creating an interactive timeline using CSS, Javascript, Python and HTML to show flow of time on scrolling which brings up different decades and videos associated with them, moreover a separate page for each decade explains them in detail for better understanding.

Detailed Project Description

The project is made to keep the visitor engaged while making them learn something new about the history of the NASA's Earth observing missions and educate them about the same.

It is done by creating a section on the website landing page which is an interactive 3d timeline moving from decade to decade on scrolling of the mouse wheel while depicting how our satellites move around the asteroids and space debris to revolve around earth to provide us with essential data.

On clicking on any of the decade, a video (present in open source by NASA) opens us which explains in detail about the satellite development and systems of that decade.

This was created using CSS, Javascript, HTML and Python over the two days of the hackathon.

On moving further down on the page, several buttons have been placed for navigating to different decades of Earth Observing Missions to depict how they have evolved over time and present the information in a better and more effective manner. This will educate the visitor of the website while keeping them interested on the aspect of technological advancement over the decades.

The website is made in such a manner that it could be updated during any and all of NASA's future Earth Observation Missions.

Space Agency Data

Space Agency Data used are as follows:

  1. NASA's Earth Observing Dashboard Data
  2. NASA Science Missions | Science Mission Directorate
  3. Basic Details on Many NASA Earth-Observing Satellites
  4. Videos Published by NASA on YouTube were used to embed in website.

Hackathon Journey

The experience of hackathon can definitely be said that of a learning one and one that brought out the team work in each of the member with the great learning experience of the challenge.

We got to learn a lot about NASA's Earth Observation Missions and moreover how to use data by them in a multimedia literacy format easily understandable to people from all sections of the society.

We were inspired by NASA's approach towards tackling problems and observing earth while pursuing for distant galaxies, depicting to always be grounded towards where you came from and taking care of your home no matter where you go.

We approached the solution to the problem by brainstorming everybody's skillset and bringing out the best in it by each one's passion.

The data was the key point and we made it a point to use the data provided by NASA and Partner agencies in a judicious manner.
