Point 0

High-Level Project Summary

We all know NASA as the space agency making waves in space exploration. At the forefront of discovery everyday. However with new mission launches like Artemis 1 some other great works are overshadowed. Especially NASA’s Earth Observing Missions. Point 0 is an easy to use/navigate website created to share the story of all of NASA's Earth Observing Missions. Past, present, and future.

Detailed Project Description

What is Point 0?

Like our motto "ad astra per aspera" NASA has always ceaslessly strived to understand our planet and the universe. Point 0 represents the beginning. Like (0,0) on a coordinate plane the aim of the project is to show the origin of NASA's Earth Observing Missions. NASA has done amazing work but most people aren't aware of the ones which aren't famous. However, these missions are just as important and have provided crucial information about our planet.

How Does it Work?

The website was created using Webflow in a wa yusers can explore the Earth Observing Missions through an interactive timeline. The beginning of the website has images which users can click to take them to what missions they want to see: Earth, Sun, Solar System, Universe or Space Experiments. This then takes them to a timeline with all the missions in chronological order. By clicking on a mission name relevant information such as purpose, launch date and achievements pop up.

Benefits: It provides an easy way to learn about NASA's Earth Observing Missions. Through the website users can see the missions in order of when they were launched and get important information about each mission.

What I Hope to Achieve: Through Point 0 I hope more people can learn about NASA's Earth Observing Missions and their history. Showing that not only famous NASA missions are worth knowing about.

Future: In the future I hope to develop this website even further and add more missions expanding beyond just Earth Observation. And to make it more interactive by adding a storyline that users can partcipate in which incorporates storytelling into the user experience. I also hope to use Spline to add 3D animations to the website to make it more creative.

Space Agency Data

NASA Earth Observing System: Used to research about Earth Observing MIssions and what they have accomplished. Data used to understand the importance of different missions and collect information for the website.

NASA Science Missions: Used to research and collect information for the website. Mission posters also inspired the design of the website and the images used.

Hackathon Journey

Why this Challenge: I've always been fascinated by all there is to discover in outer space. Whether it be skydiving or learning how to fly aircrafts, I've always enjoyed being as close to space as possible. Space science highly interests me and I've partcipated in two Space Apps Hackathons previously as well as the EO Dashboard Hackathon. I chose this challenge since I wanted to learn more about the amazing work NASA has done through their Earth Observing missions.

What Did I Learn: Through my project I got to learn about different NASA missions which I had never heard of before. While the media mostly spreads news about huge space missions these smaller ones aren't talked about. However, I learnt that these missions are just as important and have contributed tremendously in furthering our knowledge about the universe.

Challenges and Solutions: I decided to use Webflow to create my website which was a new software I hadn't previously used. However, I was able to learn through the assistance of articles online. I had also planned to incorporate Spline, a 3D animation platform, into my project. However, Webflow requires payment to embed code but I was able to incorporate other visuals such as videos to make up for it. I also plan to develop this website further and incorporate Spline in the future.

Thanks: Thank you to the wonderful local leads, subject matter experts as well as the global organising team for assisting and answering all questions on Discord. Thank you as well to NASA for running this annual hackathon. It's something I enjoy participating in very much.
