Awards & Nominations

EO Challengers has received the following awards and nominations. Way to go!

Global Nominee

YANASA

High-Level Project Summary

Show, help and teach, are the three factors on which we based the Yanasa project is based, by filtering, classifying, present we built a platform that visualizes earth observation, we are aiming to show the public and specifically policymakers a virtual experience of earth observation, And besides virtualization, we built a simulator that predicts based on machine learning what will happen if we make a specific decision (decrease CO2 production), We also built an AI that proposes solutions for the user and predict the consequences of each one and we added it to our platform and mobile application, we also built a physical visualizer in order to provide a real user experience of the decision.

Detailed Project Description

YANASA is the fruit of “EO challengers” work that aims to help policymakers benefit from Earth Observation and maximize its uptake for better regulation, make more informed decisions to address natural disasters, land management issues, the impacts of climate change...

The increasing amount of EO data and information available are not yet exploited at their full potential in all domains, the reason is that they do not have the knowledge and skills to benefit from earth observations. We made a user-friendly virtual gateway of capacity-building resources that will help nononly beginners but also professionals of all levels and disciplines find the training they need to apply EO, So, the program helps trainees at all levels to find the courses they need to develop their skills, abilities, and knowledge to apply EO. Consolidation of a large number of training opportunities, webinars, and online courses related to EO provided by NASA, other local and international organizations, space agencies, and academic institutions in one site with a filter feature for the type of training you need as well as an advantage of suggestion courses based on the profile of the user and his centers of interest and a search bar Plus a chatbot that can suggest workouts based on user questions. To ensure that the trainee benefits from the lesson we develop a map with many settings that can be adjusted (coal, oil, natural gas, bioenergy, electrification, population...), and on the earth observation dashboard, you can monitor how the modified settings affect the planet on many levels such as human - invertebrates - insects - mammals - plants - weather global warming...The project comes with an application that we developed to facilitate learning with the same features as the site, but more simplified.

In addition to all of the above, we have developed a tangible device that simulates the planet, as it contains a set of sensors and actuators that enable the modification of weather settings (temperature, humidity, lighting, wind speed, ultraviolet rays...) from a dedicated application for the device, through which the user can observe the evolution of data when changing one or more of the settings, where he will be able to understand what Get on the ground the easiest way.

Space Agency Data

Using Data Earth Observations specifically from all space agencies, we showed the climate Change and natural disasters, land management issues specifically from GODDARD Earth Sciences Data.

Hackathon Journey

First and through regular meetings we formed a team, got to know each other, and picked a challenge based on our skills, expertise, and area of knowledge after deeply understanding the problem.

We picked a team name, designed the logos..

Then we divided roles and primary tasks and made sure we got all the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to work on the challenge.

We also made sure to attend the maximum number of workshops which allowed us to dive deep into the different tools that we can use to solve the problem.

The chosen name is “Yanasa” inspired from the first letters of our names merged together.

After that, we did a brainstorming session to think of how we can approach our solution.

•   Abderrahim : developped the website of YANASA

• Nouhaila : she took in charge the data, filtered and divided it into the beginners and the advanced, added the 3D maps on the website.

•   Youness: Our infographist, he designed the logos of the demo video.

•   Salma: gather crowdsourced data and apply it to get access to available data from social networks and take care of the pitch session.

•   Afnane: designed the application for beginners to help them get along with the earth observations data. And also the professional ones to understand the data and lead them to make the right decisions.

•   Akram : Created the hardware : a concrete applied simulation of the earth : a box that you can control its settings through a dedicated application (temperature, humidity, wind speed, lighting, UV rays...) and the weather data can be easily read through the application.

It was an incredibly helpful experience for all of us as it grew our teamwork skills and we learned a lot during the workshops provided by our mentors during the challenge. We also were able to solve any issues by helping each other and didn't let any setbacks stop us from continuing to work.
