Who Is SUPERHERO?

High-Level Project Summary

As Aiona we have developed a game for a person who does not know how organisms react to situations such as space and stress conditions, and what they are facing. We used "Gene Transfer" in our game, we have integrated the transfer of a part of a living being's DNA to another living being into our game. The biggest difference of our game from other games is that it can be played simultaneously in boxes and virtually. With this idea, we can strengthen the intergenerational bond because one generation enjoys playing games such as box, card, board games, while a generation likes to play games more online, virtually, we have designed a game where everyone can learn and be conscious.

Detailed Project Description

What is Our Project?

Our project's name is Who Is SUPERHERO? It consists of an electronic board and a virtual section. So we got a game by mixing board game and virtuality. To explain the board section, we can match the virtual section with the help of the QR code on the back of the board and we can understand which character is in which section, and we can also see the position of our game on the screen. Our game is played with 4 people. When starting the game, each player chooses a character that can be Deinococcus Radiodurans, Algae, Methanosarcia or Tardigrade. Life stamps are then distributed to the players. After receiving the life stamps, players take turns rolling the dice and the game begins. After the players progress to the number on the dice, all the players read the QR code in our game and move to the virtual part of our game. Our game throws us into a random room, in which hidden orbs are hidden. So what does these orbs do, orbs help us to transfer genes. After the player finds the hidden orb, it transfers the features in the orb to himself with a single click, and this is called gene transfer. Within the given time, all players must collect the orbs they need. If the player does not need anything than it can easily pass the task thanks to his own genes, the search for extra orb begins. Players in need try to find the hidden orb they need. If the player finds his orb and increases his extra time, he can go in search of extra orb. However, if he cannot find the orb he needs, he cannot go out to find extra orb. In addition, if a player who needs the orb's genes has not found the hidden orb within the given time, one of their lives will be reduced. If they are completely exhausted, they say goodbye to the game. After the allotted time is over, a code will appear on the game screen. GO BACK TO THE BOARD. With this command, players close the virtual section and return to the board. Then they continue from the 2nd stage. We also have penalty and reward zones. If the player stumbles upon the penalty or reward zone after rolling the dice, they chooses one of the cards we have prepared. This game is a bit of a matter of luck. Fun and challenging tasks can come out of the cards. For example, when a player chooses a penalty card, the player may be given tasks such as "TRANSFER GENES TO THE PLAYER TO HIS LEFT WITH GENE TRANSFER". This task can put the player in quite a bit of trouble. But you don't have to be afraid, because by finding hidden orbs and transferring genes, you can pass on the properties of orb to yourself.

Gene transfer means the placement of certain parts of another organism's DNA in the cells of one living thing. Well, if you think about how we integrate this process into our game, let me explain it like this, for example, The character before you died in the section where you roll the dice, and the durability and characteristics of this character pass to you through gene transfer and let's say you play the character of Algae and the character that transmits his genes to you is the tardigrade, then you put aside the algae character you are playing and become a new character, algae + tardigrade.

 Sections of Who Is SUPERHERO?

Now we will introduce you to the sections in our game.

We have 3 sections as a temperature track. The yellow one is the lowest Decency among them. Red is the highest, and orange is our Decemperate temperature. For example, when we roll the dice, our character who comes to the red section can pass if he can withstand that temperature. If he can't stand it, he loses one of his lives unfortunately. Don't worry if you can find reward cards or a life orb in our department rooms. Your number of lives is increasing. Good luck 😉

After the temperature, the next radiation. After throwing the membrane, if we come to our radiation department, we throw the membrane once more. You ask why ?. If an even number comes up, we're exposed to low radiation. Well, if an odd number comes up... then your job is a little difficult because you are exposed to a high amount of radiation. If you have a feature that is resistant to this, you are one of the lucky ones. If you are not, you should go to the rooms we have designed for you and find a radiation sphere within the limited time given. We advise you to search the room thoroughly, because if you don't want to be out of the game, you shouldn't lose a life... next is an oxygen-free environment. Let's see if you can withstand the oxygen-free environment.

As you know, there is no oxygen in space, so it is important for us that you can withstand this condition. If you can't stand it, don't worry, because you still have a chance to come to the reward cards. We hope you can…

And methane gas. Some of the lucky ones among you are resistant to this feature. Those who are not lucky are definitely not upset. If you can't pass, you can find you by searching the rooms we will direct you to within the time limit.

The next standoff. We are testing whether you are as resistant in cold as in temperature. We have a two-roll dice system here. The first is to come to this section, the second is to adjust the level of coldness of this section. This time, if the prime numbers come in, it's in the normal cold. If other numbers come in, you are going to the extreme cold environment resistance test. We hope you will complete this part before entering the rooms.

Our last chapter before punishments and rewards is water. As you know, water is one of our important needs that allows us to continue our lives. That is why it is very important for us that you are resistant to a waterless environment such as in space. I hope you did. You will need to find the moss water spheres. Good luck to all players before moving on to rewards and penalties…

Rewards And Punishments

Let's come to the reward and punishment. First of all, I will tell you about the punishment, because everything that is good must come to an end, right?. Well, then what are these penalty cards ... For example, when everything is going well, you came across a penalty card, We must say that, unfortunately, one of your characteristics or your life will go away. You randomly select one of the turned-back penalty cards that we have prepared for you. If the loss of life card has arrived, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do. But if a card to give your property has arrived, you have to give that property to the person who has the most life. If there is more than one person in the equal life, those people roll the dice and the big number on the dice wins that feature. Congratulations to the person who won the feature. And we would like to note when we are sorry for the person who lost…

Actually, We were going to tell you about the award first, but like we said, we have to wait for good things. So now it's prison. As you've noticed, we're getting better and better. Prison is not as severe as punishment. You just need to kind of wait, and you only need to give half a life. We think it's better than giving your feature…

And finally, the reward. The awards are the most beautiful among them. When you roll the dice, as in the penalty cards, the person who comes to the reward section gets the right to choose a card. Again, you choose one of the cards with the back turned. If you are lucky, you can draw a property card. Also, if this card doesn't come out, it doesn't mean you're not lucky. In our other cards, there are features such as +1 life, +2 life and renewing all lives. You are lucky in every way. We still wish you good luck. Good luck, We hope you will come across the reward sections...

CHARACTERS

1-Algie

  • Hi, I'm Algae. I thrive in fresh and salty waters, wet soils, on rocks and trees, and live there.
  • I am an aerobic photosynthetic organism.
  • I have chlorophyll and other pigments necessary for photosynthesis
  • Some of my relatives thrive in the snow, ice and high mountains at the poles. We can live at the poles, at heights, in water sources (at 30-55°C). Here they are seen in color due to their pigments. Some algae, on the other hand, are found in hot water sources (50-55°C). Sea algae from my relatives have adapted to salt water. Because we can easily adapt to the places we are located, we managed to live in space for exactly 16 months as a result of Nasa's experiments. Because, as we said, we are very resistant to radiation and cold.

2-Tardie

  • Hi, I'm a Water Bear, and my other name is Tardigrade. Very low and high temperatures, high radiation, vacuum environment are very challenging for other living beings. But my characteristics help me overcome these difficult conditions. I can live at temperatures as high as -200 degrees and +150 degrees. This is great!I was exposed to cosmic radiation from the Sun and vacuum conditions for 12 hours in the space environment. And even when I returned to earth, I continued to live and reproduce thanks to my own proteins. Thanks to our unique proteins, it may be possible for humans to live on other planets. Who knows…

3-DeoRadie

  • Hi, I'm Deinococcus. The scientists who put me outside the International Space Station (ISS) saw that I survived in open space for three years. This is a great thing, isn't it?. I can withstand the harsh conditions of outer space. For example, I am resistant to cold, fluid loss and acid. I can resist 3 thousand times the radiation that could kill a person. I'm also in the Guinness Book of World Records. Glad to meet you, dear space app.

4-MetArch

  • Hi, I'm Archaea. In some ways I look more like bacteria, and in some ways I look more like eukaryotes.I can live in very extreme conditions. For example, I am a person who can live in harsh environments such as hot, salty, acidic and oxygen-free environments that other living things cannot live in. I have species that like heat, salty water. Some of my species can even produce methane gas. I can reduce the toxic properties of metals. That's great. In fact, although I have many more characteristics, I am not a person who likes to praise myself. So for now I'm done. See you later, Space app.

5-SuperHero

  • Hi, I'm Super Hero. You will see me when all the chapters are finished. The winning player gets a chance to meet me and get my features. Well, who am I?. As you can see in the game, you must have some characteristics to pass the sections. I'm lucky that I have all of those qualities. Because the characteristics of all my teammates were transferred to me. To see the winning player... 😉

Game Rules

Game Rules,

- It is played with 4 players.

-Each player has 3 lives. Those who have the right to life are eliminated.

-Before the game starts, players are given cards with their own characteristics.

-Dice are rolled for the order in which the players start the game. The big number starts as the incoming first. (If more than one person has the same number, a Decouple can be drawn between them or the dice is thrown again.)

-If the person eliminated from the game is eliminated in which section, the characteristics of that player are given to another player who reaches that section.

-Reward and penalty cards are selected face-down.

-The last remaining player turns into a Super hero by winning the game

Section Rules,

-In the radiation part, the player rolls the dice again, if an even number comes up, he is exposed to low radiation, if an odd number comes up, he is exposed to high radiation.

-The player who comes to the standoff section rolls the dice again. If a prime number comes in, it is exposed to a degree that is not extremely cold, but if other numbers come in, it is exposed to extreme cold.

-The player who comes to the Prices section gives half of one life and cannot play a round.

-If you are not in compliance with the required condition in the department you come from, you will be directed to the rooms. If you find the sphere that can save you in the rooms, you will not lose life.

-A person who cannot find the sphere loses a life. Our rooms are a kind of rescue area.

What Is Our AIM?

  • Our goal is to design a digital or analog platform that will allow users to explore the environmental stresses of space travel, understand how various organisms cope with these stresses, and combine the characteristics of these organisms to create a space biology hero. While designing this platform, we have to aim to educate and entertain the users.

  • Our second goal is here was to connect the ages So what do we mean, while the old people like to play games such as box, board, card games, today's children and young people are more inclined to computer games.

What Do We Use to Improve Our Idea?

  • We scanned articles.
  • We examined the data that Nasa gave us.
  • We consulted with our teachers.(Especially Elif Doğan Yılmaz(Our biology teacher)and Prof.Dr.Işık Didem Karagöz).

Space Agency Data

  • https://science.nasa.gov/tardigrade-moss -> Tardigrades are known to be able to go for decades without food or water, to survive temperatures from near absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, to survive pressures from near zero to well above that on ocean floors, and to survive direct exposure to dangerous radiations.
  • https://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/livingthings/glowing_algae.html-> Phytoplankton use photosynthesis to grow. During photosynthesis, the green pigment chlorophyll absorbs light, which allows plants to produce organic carbon (carbohydrates) from carbon dioxide and water. The amount of organic carbon plants produce is called primary productivity.
  • https://www.nasa.gov/feature/ames/microscopic-superheroes-to-help-protect-astronaut-health-in-space/->Tardigrades, also known as water bears due to their shape under a microscope, possess superpowers when it comes to surviving really harsh conditions. Understanding how they tolerate extreme environments – including the one astronauts experience in space, with microgravity and elevated radiation levels – can better guide research into protecting humans from the stresses of long-duration space travel. An experiment starting aboard the International Space Station, called Cell Science-04, will help reveal how tardigrades do it.
  • Risk of Adverse Health Effects Due to Host-Microorganism Interactions->Given that evidence collected during space flight indicates alterations in microbial virulence and astronaut immune function, there is a possibility that infectious disease will have increased prevalence and/or will be more severe during spaceflight missions.
  • Risk of Reduced Crew Health and Performance Due to Hypoxia [inactive]->Risk Ratings and Dispositions per Design Reference Mission (DRM) Category
  • https://science.nasa.gov/biological-physical/programs/space-biology->The goal of the Space Biology Program in the animal biology area is to understand the basic mechanisms that animals use to adapt and/or acclimate to spaceflight and alterations in gravity in general. Animals are frequently used to model human disease as well as how humans respond to stressful stimuli.
  • https://www.https://genelab-data.ndc.nasa.gov/genelab/projects/nasa.gov/hrp/5-hazards-of-human-spaceflight->Behavioral issues among groups of people crammed in a small space over a long period of time, no matter how well trained they are, are inevitable. Research is also being conducted in workload and performance, light therapy for circadian alignment, phase shifting and alertness.  Facing a communication delay of up to 20 minutes one way and the possibility of equipment failures or a medical emergency, astronauts must be capable of confronting an array of situations without support from their fellow team on Earth.Important habitability factors include temperature, pressure, lighting, noise, and quantity of space. It’s essential that astronauts are getting the requisite food, sleep and exercise needed to stay healthy and happy.

Hackathon Journey

Hey! We are Aiona. We consist of 4 people Eylül,Elifnaz,Azra,Ecenaz and of course our consultant Ömer Taşçı.Some of us participated in the Space Apps Challenge last year and we decided to participate with the encouragement from them. When choosing a challenge, we first read all the challenges one by one and came up with ideas, we started to continue with our favorite idea, we consulted our biology teacher and agreed that it was a good idea. While developing this project, our aim was to instill in space conditions and harsh conditions even to people who do not know how organisms can withstand or endure while playing games. Sometimes it can be exhausting, of course, but somehow we manage to overcome it. We helped each other a lot while making models, drawings, etc., for example, we showed Elifnaz how to draw in online. We took a lot of photos and accumulated memories. We traveled together, dusted and ate. While developing our project, we developed our project by interviewing Elif Doğan Yılmaz, the biology teacher of our school, and Prof. Dr. Işık Didem Karagöz from Gaziantep University, whom she knew. Also Our Local Lead Ferdi Çelik, our Tech Expert Efe Yalçınkaya and all mentors who helped us we thank them very much for their contribution. Most importantly, we are very tired, we are getting tired, but it has been our greatest happiness to carry out a study by learning, teaching and researching something by having fun
