High-Level Project Summary

We developed a prototype inspired by Medical Calculators. An interactive plataform that educates and sensibilizes users on the risks of their spaceflight, considering their duration and destination. How does it work?Go to the calculator page and enter the details of your space travel: the type of travel and the duration. Then you will see the risk scores for different categories for your travelWhat tools, coding languages…?The site was built using wordpress and the calculator using a simple logic languageWhat do you hope to achieve? Quickly show the risks for a specific spaceflight.

Detailed Project Description

We developed a prototype inspired by Medical Calculators.

Using data from Nasa's Human Research Roadmap, we created an interactive plataform that educates and sensibilizes users on the risks of their spaceflight, considering their duration and destination.

In addition to learning about the risks of space travel, users can learn some natural mechanisms present in different species that would overcome or mitigate some of the challenges of spaceflight.

We selected 3 categories of diseases due to the major risks that humans experience during their time in space:

- Radiation - Development of oncological diseases

- Gravity - Muscular and Osteoarthicular diseases

- Isolation - Psychiatric diseases

After this we did a lot of research on each category, trying to see which parameters have the most impact in the results that are presented. Factors like Age, Gender, Previous Space travels, Types of Space Travels, Lifestyle have a major impact on the risk of development of these diseases. Therefore, using the data of the Human Research Roadmap including also the variables, we started to build our calculator.

Each result is presented not in percentage of developing a certain disease but qualitatively.

Moreover, a detailed explanation will also be added everytime a result is presente to the person that is using the calculator.

Space Agency Data

Our team mostly used NASA data, more specifically the Nasa Human Research Roadmap. We used this data to build our calculator.

We also used the pubmed database to search for more information about each topic

Hackathon Journey

Our Journey was not easy because the groups that we were in suffered some losses. We only started to join for meeting in the middle of Saturday. That did not make us quit, we started to brainstorm and reach a common idea. We divided tasks and then started working on the aim that we had in mind. Despite all the obstacles and the lack of time, we are proud of our result.
