Space Biology Superhero

High-Level Project Summary

We have provided people a website which provides basic knowledge about space stress, its types and, the solutions that scientists are working on. It solves the challenge because it excites people about space travel and also tells them how plants and animals adapt to it. It is important towards the future of space travel. We also created a hybrid species, a Tardipufferlin, which is basically a modified version of the well-known tardigades.

Detailed Project Description

The creature we put together can survive starvation (it overcomes this problem by almost completely stopping its metabolism) or forceful impacts like a bullet (it is completely covered with the strong pangolin scales we provided it with). It can also survive extreme temperatures and we call it the Tardipufferlin . We can truly call it a superhero as it can survive extreme temperatures as cold as -273 degrees Celsius and as hot as 151 degrees Celsius.

Imagine a scenario where it is floating on a planet with low gravity and it needs to come down. It will expand a sac-like structure joint by an arm-like extension from the back of the organism, creating a vaccum inside it. When it opens, the matter outside (could be solid, liquid or gas) will enter the sac (passing ciliated epithelium which will filter the matter), increasing its weight. The sac is internally made of stratified squamous epithelium. The limb is flexible and goes up and down at a joint based on the conditions.

We went old school and used paper and pen to design the Tardipufferlin.

Hackathon Journey

We learnt that "A stitch in time saves nine". Also, we had a ton of fun!

We learnt a lot about fascinating creatures like tardigrades and pangolins, as well as conditions in space. This was a great educational experience.

Apart from gaining this knowledge, we also learnt the value of team work and time management. It also improved out skill to leverage online resource properly.
