Global Nominee

Pocket-U(niverse)

High-Level Project Summary

Pocket-U helps you to generate a personalized artistic document, in a fanzine style, with verified scientific information, breaking the idea that one must read academic papers to understand what's happening in the world of science and technology, thus giving good information dynamically and within reach of a sheet of paper.

Detailed Project Description

Pocket-U is a web-app developed to share scientific information in a more accessible way by making use of art, literature and other visual elements.

We seek to generate meaningful connections with people, regardless of socioeconomic, cultural, or educational background. We want to let you know that there’s a place in science for you, and you don’t have to be a high level academic to be able to connect with the world of science.

We have an automatic generator of literary (poems, stories, etc.) and visual (generative art) elements, which will allow you to create artistic works based on open data, consulted and verified by NASA, which will be presented in printable and easy to distribute fanzines, allowing you to popularize science in an accessible and fun way.

Space Agency Data

To inspire:

-Art and Science at NASA

-Earth As Art at NASA

We took various images from the website and its recommended resources. We used small texts, specifically from the section: people, to share bits of history and inspirational statements from NASA's human contributors.

To create:

-Art and Science at NASA

From this resource we use the: gallery, to feed the visuals of our Landing Page we specifically consult the section: image of the day, above all We use resources from crafts and activities from the website and from the book: activity Book Universe.

To impact:

-Earth As Art at NASA

From this resource we use texts and satellite images of earth planet, to transmit how our planet can organically generate incredible art.

To explain results and process:

-NASA Science Mission Directorate

-NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio

From these resources we used static images and screenshots of videos that shared data in an infographic.

Hackathon Journey

Our first challenge was the scalability of our web-app. Although we know the multiple possibilities with AI, we decided to validate the technologies that we can use for the automatic creation of those scientific-artistic elements that will compose the fanzine itself, looking for the message to be organic, honest and understandable for any type of audience, hoping to reach marginalized communities through a simple and familiar language. The most complex thing was connecting scalability while covering people groups that do not have access to information through technological devices.

We seek to be empathic and adapt our solution for our users. We hope it will have a real impact on them.

We believe in art as a distribution channel of knowledge, so we proposed the fanzine for its ease of photocopying and sharing, recognizing its social and political impact since the beginning of the format.

We recognize that no matter how well trained an AI is, it will have limitations when connecting emotionally with people, even so, we trust in planting the seed of curiosity and generate awareness about environmental, political, socioeconomic, cultural, technological and scientific situations to our problems. All this by distributing interesting and useful material to everybody, reactivating the distribution of knowledge in all possible ways.
