High-Level Project Summary
Challenge TURNING STEM TO STEAM. We found a book called "You Are Going" part of NASAS open source data. We depicted it with modeling clay and also trough a painting. It tells of past missions to the moon and about the mission Artemis.TheNASA ASTRONAUT SPACE BOOT KID'S KIT includes a pair of boots, paint, a canvas, brushes gem stickers, and iron on patches. We printed the two designs and placed on the book, and decorated with gems.We want to prove and promote that NASA's open space data can be understood by children.

Detailed Project Description

various art techniques, attending young generations and considering inclusion for people who might have learning difficulties.
We are making Wearable art that tells about a research or mission by NASA. In this case it was Artemis Mission (after reading the children’s book “You are Going”)
We are using various art techniques, attending young generations and considering inclusion for people who might have learning difficulties.
Knowing NASA's open source data ,besides being topics included the New Generation Science Standards, they should be an educational tool accessible to all.
We would like for all schools to receive Three NASA ASTRONAUT KID’S BOOT KITS. They will have fun learning about a mission or research project. They will enjoy decorating the boots. And lastly, they will be spreading the news about NASA’s open source data.
Development and Methods
Our solution permits anyone, especially children to use and share through art, NASA’s Open Source Data and its partners.
It makes the designer of the garment learn by using the Open Source Data and retell it through art.
- Benefits:
It permits the sharing of information related to NASA’s missions, research, pictures, etc.
It is engaging for designer of the boot.
It is inclusive, anyone can do it.
It promotes art.
It promotes learning.
We want children to use NASA’s Open source data and other resources provided by NASA and its partner in an engaging way and make art with it, and to be able to wear it and share the knowledge.
Software:
- We will use CANVA to print the iron ons.
SPACE AGENCY DATA
We need the space agency data as an inspiration to design and decorate the boot.
- How did the different space data inspire your project?
It made it simple for the youngest member of our team to be able to create both designs.
Method:
- After choosing the challenge to work with, our first step was to find NASA Open Source Data to work with.
- We chose the missions to the Moon. We found a children’s book called “We are going”.
- We read it a couple of times to understand it. We focused our design on the Artemis Project and the book.
- We planned a couple of designs to both illustrate and model with clay.
- The painting and clay model were made.
- We made patterns for the piece of clothing: space boots.
- The boots were put together
- The designs were printed and added on to the garment.
- We made a box for packaging, and placed the boots, stickers, paint, brushes, iron on patches and modeling clay.
Possibility and Sustainability of the Project
- How will your project be sold to companies, people or institutions?
Our project will be donated to NASA and its partners for educational purposes, so that they can produce and distribute 3 kits to each public school in Mexico.
- How can you fund this project economically?
We can create a contest for sponsor partnership with NASA, allowing them to include their ad on the packaging.
There are many companies that support STEAM activities locally, nationally and globally.
(Medtronix, Steren, TE Medical, are some examples)
What are the costs of this project? Approximately $17.69 USD
-A pair of space boots similar to these cost approximately $12 USD. We made them from scratch, reducing the cost to about a half.
-Iron on patches. A package with 20 pcs costs approximately $16.50 USD. We need two pieces.$0.83 each. Total $1.66 USD
-Sticker gems. A package with 300 costs $10.99. Each gem costs $0.04. The kits will include 20 pcs. Total $0.73-Canva painting kit. An economic option with two canvas costs $10.00 approximately. We would use only one per kit.
- Package of modeling clay costs around $3.68 each package
-Packaging (white box). A set of 32 pieces costs $20.76. Individually this is $0.62
Boots $6.00 USD
2 patches $1.66 USD
Sticker gems $0.73USD
Canva/kit $5.00USD
Modeling clay $3.68USD
Packaging $0.62USD
Approximate cost$17.69 USD
*If we make a large purchase for each item, the costs are reduced.
Our potential clients are NASA, NASA’s Partners, and companies sponsors of STEM and STEAM projects.
This project is designed to be used by children above 6.
Having educational purposes, our business model is subventions and grants.
Space Agency Data
We used the SPACE AGENCY DATA as an inspiration for the project by finding information of the differente space suits worn and finding a mission to depict.

Hackathon Journey

long journey for us. We started learn
about the hackathon since Februrary of this year. We learned trhough the past challenges the mechanics of the event. We learned many things, teamwork, failing, finding other soultions, specific facts about space. We discovered that the sky is the limit! We provided different solutions. We found all the support from our local lead Edson Perez, whom we wish to thank for letting us be part of this.
