High-Level Project Summary
According to the UN, 147 million children missed over half of in-person instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why our project solves a global problem - inaccessibility to qualitative education. It’s extremely important for us, because every child should have an access to education. To solve this problem we created a 2D platformer, which has the goal to introduce to 3-12 grade children and teenagers JWST’s features through the Universe’s history and increase an interest in JWST and astronomy. Our team used their creativity, game and level design and programming skills to create a game that presents information about JWST in an interactive and interesting way.

Detailed Project Description
Our solution for this hackathon is implemented as a 2D game, namely a 2D platformer. The design of the background, mechanics and animations was made in a cosmic style, which corresponds to the stage of formation of the universe that we chose in the implemented level - the formation of star systems and galaxies. Namely, stars, galaxies, and clusters of various objects of the universe are depicted against the background.
The game character has many opportunities for action: running, jumping, and animations of the character being in place and turning in place were also made.
Animation and running mechanics - for horizontal movement of the character on the platform;
Jump animation and mechanics - designed to overcome vertical obstacles;
Animation and mechanics of turning in place - to change the horizontal direction of the character.
We used the platformer type of the game, because it's a very simple and interesting way to demonstrate and introduce JWST and its story.
By adding these mechanics, our team wanted to achieve diversity and interest from the players.
Used tools: Adobe Photoshop, Visual Studio code, Piskel.
Used software: Paint, Ubuntu, Unity
Used hardware: Laptop
Used languages: C#.
Space Agency Data
We used data about population III stars from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, images of Jupiter from JWST, JWST characteristics from NASA site, JWST deployment sequence, List of cosmic targets of JWST, and JWST observatory parts and their characteristics. We used all of this data to scientifically reinforce our project, to create a game with usage of truthful and proved data. To emphasize the importance and power of JWST, we used it d In this case, research of the Spitzer Space Telescope was very helpful, because its data about the population III stars also connected with JWST, in order to research the very first galaxies and stars. We also used figures from the space agency, which are about different models of the universe and the creation of the universe, especially the Big Bang Theory.
Hackathon Journey
Our team was incredibly inspired to participate in this hackathon in order to test our abilities in solving challenges, especially directly connected with space exploration. We were astonished about JWST since it was launched to space. We were extremely excited to see the first photos of one of NASA’s biggest inventions lately. So, our team dedicated one of our models in a national competition last spring.
Through the entire hackathon our team refreshed in our minds as much information about JWST as we could and improved practical skills too as well. In addition, we learned lots of different theories about the appearance of the universe despite the Big Bang Theory. Thanks to this hackathon, we are striving for sharing gained information with children and popularizing space exploration through our app.
