Twinkler

High-Level Project Summary

Educational project that solves lack of education in space knowledge. We developed mobile application concept that teach people about stellar variability and help them understand how dynamic the night sky really is! Via mobile app we can show changes of the sky that not visible in current time, because changes are too slow. It is important, because universe is so exciting!

Detailed Project Description

Our project is potentially an android application that demonstrates the behavior of stars - namely, changing their glow. The user with the help of a gyroscope can watch the stars around on his phone. By the way, this artificially clears the sky for the user, polluted by smog or blocked by skyscrapers. Filtering is available to him, with the help of which he selects a certain type of stars - by the type of luminosity variability and by the type of stars themselves. Further, by clicking on a star or by searching, the user opens a detailed description of the star. Here a model of a star is modeled in a certain period of its life and a description of why this happens. Based on the data received from NASA, the application can predict the model of the star in the future. Luminescence changes are animated, while real changes occur very slowly, stretching over years or centuries. Figma and canvas were used to demonstrate the project. In order to understand, for example, exactly how a certain chemical element affects a star, the user has an interesting feature: he can become an experimenter and create the cause of changes on the star himself! So our application with the help of visibility eliminates people's ignorance about the stars and encourages the user to explore our endless and infinitely beautiful cosmos.

Space Agency Data

We used General Catalog of Variable Star to match and filter different twinkling stars in our project.

Also, data from Kepler Space Telescope is used for rendering stars in application.

Hackathon Journey

Our team had exciting experience in developing and finding out solutions for the challenges. We chose this challenge, because before this, most of the participants in our team was not familiar with this type of mechanism on universe. And this give us aspiration to learn brand new information and provide this complicated information in easy form. We want to thank everyone who give us opportunity to participate in this kind of hackathons and way to improve ourselves.
