Call of Stars

High-Level Project Summary

Aim of this project is to make people understand the transformation and precession of sky and evolution of stars through using an interactive 2D video game. Evolution of a single star is indeed highly fascinating, so imagine how the view would seem if the long-term transformation of millions of stars you see when you look up, was sped up to make it viable for humans! You may only imagine it but let us introduce you our game: “[insert name]”. This game is developed using Unity and React for software, Pixilart and Pixelit for graphics. We are sure that our fully-developed game "solves" the challenge, because phases of the life of a star is handled correctly.

Detailed Project Description

We, in fact, developed Call of Stars to make it easy for all audiences to understand without difficulties.

First, Call of Stars is based on a story and has a boy called Ali as the protagonist, who is also in love with stars and astronomy. He wants to use Hubble 50 Telescope, the world's best telescope ever built, so that he can see the stars. However, he has to take an exam in order to have the permission to use Hubble 50 Telescope. The exam asks about life-cycle of stars (with that, the game teaches the evolution of a star.).

Then, Ali asks his uncle for help, for his uncle, Veysel works in world's biggest space agency. Ali wants Veysel to get on a space shuttle, imprison the stars in pocket universes, get them back and forth in time and, at last, record their life-cycle.

Veysel accepts and goes on the mission. This is where the actual gameplay starts. The player can navigate the star ship and must avoid meteors coming towards to the star ship. This part of gameplay takes 30 seconds. When Veysel reaches the star, he imprisons the star into a pocket universe and gets the star first back, then forth in time. While recording the life of the star, he, in the background, explains every single phase. After he records the video, he sends it to Ali.

And... Exam Time! Ali takes the exam. The player is wanted to answer those questions. If correct answers are more than wrong answers, Ali passes, if vice versa, he fails and the player is wanted to try again.

That's generally what happens throughout the game. We tried to handle the story while we tried to keep the gameplay element alive.

Our team was divided into three groups.

Software: Ahmet Yasin Marşil used Unity for the main code and Yusuf Said Aktan used React for our team's website.

Graphics: Behran Attı used Pixilit and Pixelart for the character design/animation and Mehmet Arda Yıldırım (Team Captain) used Pixilit and Pixelart for background's and celestials' design.

Research: Ahmet Özdemir and Yusuf Ensar Taşkın scanned some space agency's open source database and found useful information for the project. They also prepared exam questions and all scientific texts.

Space Agency Data

A part of our group scanned NASA's and CSA's data, and blended the parts which are eligible for our project.

Hackathon Journey

Space Apps Challenge was a beautiful and fun experience. In fact, this is our first international competition and we are so excited. We thought that we can create another great game based on our previous project experiences. We, thus, choose "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" Challenge. We tried to transfer our knowledge in the most possible effective and in the most possible instructive way while we develop our project. Although sometimes hassles occurred, we overcame them because we want to present you our project in the most beautiful way. We would like to thank Ahmed Yasin Marşil, for preparing the main code of the game and doing the most difficult part of the work.
