High-Level Project Summary

I selected the climate change related challenge as it is the most critical issue humanity is facing currently. As I am based in Pune, India, I wanted to narrate a regional, contextual story of climate change. India has been witnessing natural disasters very frequently which are a result of climate change. In this short video, I highlighted a few examples such as flood, landslide, drought and heatwave but the impacts of climate change are much broader, deeper and frequent. I concluded this video with a strong message - The world is one family. The earth is our home. Let's work together to protect our home. Yes we can!

Detailed Project Description

I wanted to narrate a regional, contextual story of climate change. India has been witnessing natural disasters very frequently which are a result of climate change. In this short video, I have highlighted a few examples but the impacts of climate change are much broader, deeper and frequent.

On July 26, 2005, Mumbai received a rainfall of 944 mm within a few hours which was the highest in the last 100 years. At least 1,000 people lost their lives and 14,000 homes were destroyed. In 2013, Maharashtra witnessed the worst drought in 40 years. More than 7, 800 villages were affected. On June 17, 2013, the heavy rainfall caused massive flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand. At least 5000 people lost their lives. In 2022, the heat waves affected 16 states of India as the country reported 280 heat wave days from March to May. Climate change has about 4-9 per cent impact on agriculture each year. As agriculture contributes 15% to India’s GDP, climate change presumably causes about 1.5 per cent loss in GDP. By 2030, rice and wheat are likely to see about 6-10 per cent decrease in yields.

These are some of the examples of how climate change is affecting India. Climate change is a global phenomenon and every country is getting affected due to it. Carbon dioxide, the heat-trapping greenhouse gas, is the primary driver of recent global warming.

To tackle climate change, countries have agreed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous interference with the climate system. The Paris Agreement aims to keep global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

As citizens, we can modify our lifestyle to deal with climate change. We can use cycles, public transportation and electric vehicles. We can avoid using Air Conditioning appliances as much as possible. We can install solar panels on our roof. We can plant more trees. Let's start from today!

Hackathon Journey

It was a great learning experience to participate in this international hackathon organized by NASA. I tried to form a team but didn't get suitable team members due to lack of bandwidth. Hence I decided to take-up this challenge on my own. It was an insightful experience to read several articles on climate change and narrate a contextual story in form of a short video. I would like to thank NASA and Space Apps Challenge team for organizing this enriching hackathon.
