High-Level Project Summary
The project works as follows: the manhole is connected to a galvanized steel funnel (resistant to sun, water, weigh etc), just below it will have the shredder that will shred the garbage, after the shredder there will be a basket that retains the garbage, which will be removed by the municipal cleaning staff.Have you ever stopped to think that our proposal is viable and simple?! What can you think of, to help us improve the environment of cities? And what can we do to reduce the effects of climate change on urban life?

How does the Climate Changes affect our lives?
The water cycle is directly linked to the climate. Thus, changes in climate that alter the rainfall regime can cause an increase in the occurrence of extreme hydrological events, such as floods and long droughts. These events affect the supply of water, threatening the supply of water resources for all.
In Salvador, rainfall has increased in the last 10 years, with average rainfall between 175 mm and 180 mm, with cases of several floods and clogged drains that cause complications for citizens, for example floods. The rainiest months are between April and July, with monthly averages above 200 mm/month and peaks above 300 mm/month in April and May.
Flooding occurs when there is a rise in the water level in the river drainage channel, due to the increase in flow, reaching the maximum level of the channel. Intense rains, soil impermeability, incorrect disposal of garbage, drainage problems and land occupation also contribute to causing flooding in Brazilian cities.
Such occurrences cause flooding of residences and public roads, material losses, furniture, damage to cars, objects, proliferation of diseases such as malaria, hepatitis, yellow fever, leptospirosis, dengue and others.
The purpose of our project is a proposal to face the problems of floods in cities, we present the smart manhole as a solution. This manhole was designed as an alternative to filter rainwater and retain garbage thrown into the sewage system.
The project works as follows: the manhole is connected to a galvanized steel funnel (resistant to sun, water, weigh etc), just below it will have the shredder that will shred the garbage, after the shredder there will be a basket that retains the garbage, which will be removed by the municipal cleaning staff.
Have you ever stopped to think that our proposal is viable and simple?! What can you think of, to help us improve the environment of cities? And what can we do to reduce the effects of climate change on urban life?
Space Agency Data
Data from space agencies was instrumental in informing the line we would use of content to inform the youth impacted by our video, as well as further informing our team about climate change and its impact. With that, after we high school students make use of the resources made available by NASA, we are now much more able to perceive and analyze the events in our lives where we live, in addition to making our video even more complete in order to educate other young people around of the world.
Hackathon Journey
The Hackathon journey was sensational for our team, it all started with our team participating in a Hackathon within the public schools of Salvador, where we were champions and then invited to participate in Nasa Space apps salvador. In this event, we developed solutions to help the planet with the carbon issue and, consequently, solutions were created for climate change.
During the event we had access to a really cool structure, access to computers and to really NASA level tools and content! And for us this was certainly transformative and we ended the marathon weekend proud of what we built and the impact our project will generate.
We would like to thank all the staff at our school, all the staff at the event's organization in the city of Salvador and the Caffeine team for their support and support on our journey.
