Global Nominee

Semilla Peruana

High-Level Project Summary

Semilla Peruana is an application whose target audience is the farmer so that he can consult the best context to carry out his harvest. This would considerably solve the concern they have about the ideal dates to carry out this process. They know that due to climate variability, crop fields can be affected by droughts, landslides or heavy rains, putting their investments and the population's food security at risk. In this way, having digital and instantaneous consultation tools, they will be able to orient themselves in their work and safeguard their economic and work investments, considering possible risk factors in advance.

Detailed Project Description

Nasa uses remote sensing to find vulnerabilities and flood risks among communities. This provides accurate information to farmers about changing rainfall patterns and as a result the frequency and intensity of flooding.

The app provides the farmer with information on weather changes, the percentage of risk of sowing, the appropriate date to cultivate, information about the soil, temperature and climate suitable for the crop while waiting for its harvest.

The farmer registers his crops (rice, potatoes, grapes, among others) and the app uses data to show the farmer the appropriate dates to cultivate and the risks that his crop may suffer.

For the development of the app, we use Js and Balsamic. With this app, it is expected that the farmer will not lose his crop and combat food insecurity.

Space Agency Data

Data was obtained from the Brazilian Space Agency to show climatic changes and possible catastrophes to help the farmer to have almost accurate data on the risks of agriculture on certain dates.

Hackathon Journey

Undoubtedly, participating in this hackathon was very enriching to explore new technologies and break barriers related to climate change. We learned to generate innovative solutions through the potential of open science, how to do scientific research using reliable sources, among others. One of our members told us the story of his grandfather, and we were very moved to know that there was a certain population in Cerroblanco, Peru that suffered the worst consequences of climate change, especially in agriculture. That is how, joining our potential as a team, we created Semillas Peruanas. Our team members are from different Peruvian regions, that’s why we had to work remotely, and we learned that collaboration is key to build better solutions and there are no limits if we want to make the change by implementing a technological measure. We appreciate this opportunity that helped us to know how to implement quality solutions and build a better future.
