Carbon Auto Calculator by Probha Aurora Team, Bangladesh

High-Level Project Summary

The purpose of the app, hosted by Probha Aurora, is to calculate how much carbon footprint an organization or an individual emits through its daily activities and recommend mitigation measures. By using this app, a person, industry or organization can acknowledge more about how carbon is emitted frequently in their daily life, through food consumption, travel, daily habits, and other activities. It is possible to add a NASA global map by aggregating the records of all users. By doing this, any person from anywhere, people who are interested in dealing with climate disaster, can easily figure out the carbon footprint sitting on the other side of the earth.

Detailed Project Description

As from Probha Aurora to combat climate change, we are going to create an application through which a specific person or an organization, a factory, or a family can calculate the number of carbon emissions. Not only that, how much excess has been emitted, but also how to mitigate it, opportunities and plans.

A special workshop was organized by Probha Aurora on September 13, 2022, to develop an app-based solution to measure carbon emissions and create awareness. This workshop was organized to get feedback from key stakeholders on the prototype of the app.

The Carbon Footprint Calculator works on specific information from different sections, including transportation, food, utilities, and daily usage. Users have to incorporate answers to the questions in each section where the application takes the information from the user and completes the calculation such as

  •  Any information can be added daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
  •  Information might be required for transportation: which mood the user has selected (walking, running, rickshaw, bicycle, bus, car, train, plane) for a certain distance. How long did the user travel?
  • Information on food is collected: User's daily eating habits (high-fat diet, vegetarian diet, extra meat, limited meat, little meat, only vegetable diet)
  • Moreover, records the use of non-biodegradable products, and unsustainable products in daily use items.
  • If the amount of carbon footprint of the user exceeds the limit it recommends offsetting opportunities etc.

It is possible to add a NASA global map by aggregating the records of all users if someone is a user in a particular location or if a particular organization is a user. By doing this, any person from anywhere, people who are interested in dealing with climate disaster, can easily figure out the carbon footprint sitting on the other side of the earth. anywhere at any time, anyone is allowed to know the amount of carbon print if it is life.

The map shall be visible within RGB color according to the amount of carbon footprint. As a result, they can immediately take measures to reduce their carbon footprint. The global map means that the carbon emissions of any place in the world can be known at any time in any way. Immediately neighboring countries interested in climate action can offset the carbon footprint of that place by taking quick action. Even in any country any people or common people in that country be it financially or any alternative method.

We will show that using the records of carbon footprints from this calculator, it is possible to see remotely through satellites instantly, carbon emissions and footprints in real-time location. That anyone can take action to offset the footprints. Such a system in the application is called “Carbon Auto Calculator”.

There have been launched many similar carbon footprint tracker apps, but for the first time, we're going to create an app that allows us to track real-time carbon emissions and record location-based footprints.

It will be an open-source global emissions tracking solution - which will track and notify real-time emissions of individuals, facilities, families, households, products, offices, industries, etc.

It will also be convenient to take related decisions in real-time.

A related integrated data pool will be created using NASA’s Data Hub satellite data. Based on that, the Auto Emission Calculator will measure the carbon emissions and report the results

The data will be collected and analyzed by dividing it into consumer and sectoral. There will be the facility of auto calculation using machine learning

There will be provision and management of real-time area and facility emission rate updates using IoT devices. It will auto calculate carbon from consumer to the sector, individual to the area. For this, modern technology, current data hubs will be used. We believe it will play an important role in combating climate change.

For language, we shall be adding Bangla & English for now. We shall more language for the time being.

As it is a program-based app we are having the facility to use it on iOS, Android, and Desktop.

There are many similar applications such as Klima, joule bug, Joro, and so on, such international applications can only be used by individuals. We are facilitating individuals, households, families, institutions, organizations, and industries to calculate their own carbon emissions and update them from time to time. Also, Users are facilitated by purchasing private accounts, to hide name identification from the records in the global map.

Through this application, we have given special priority to the individual as well as institutional and organizational. Not only that, in any case, there are more or fewer facilities for mitigating carbon emissions. The application is one of the conveniences is "products". It is possible to connect the data center directly to calculate how much carbon emission is happening under any organization from the manufacturing of a product to reaching the consumer.

Even temporary consumables may be exchanged with permanent consumables, and details of where to purchase may be provided. Besides, the use of eco-friendly products will be encouraged by Sabuj sathi.

To ensure the high quality of the product we are using the following applications:

  • Dart Flutter: Flutter is an Open-Source UI SDK developed by Google. It allows the development of iOS/Android apps and uses Dart as the programming language. Dart is an Open-Source, client-side programming language. It is easy to learn, stable, and creates high-performance applications.
  • Laravel framework with PHP: Laravel is a free and open-source PHP web framework, created by Taylor Otwell and intended for the development of web applications following the model–view–controller architectural pattern and based on Symfony.

Hackathon Journey

Every competition is a different experience. Naturally, participating in the NASA Space Apps Challenge is also a different experience for us. Participating in this competition has given us a better understanding of how a global organization like NASA can play a fundamental and positive role in bringing about positive change in young societies. It takes time to mature an idea, team effort can add a new dimension to the work - we are motivated to participate in such competition assuming that. Our approach was realistic, and we did the best we could within our capabilities. In this case, we have applied all the qualities that we have to the maximum. Having a team and sharing with each other have helped us in this regard. Various data from NASA have been helpful for us. The role of BASIS in Bangladesh was also very important and helpful in this regard. We would like to thank NASA for organizing such a competition. We believe that this initiative of NASA will play a major role in creating positive thinking among the young society and making important contributions to society in the future.
