Flood Awareness System

High-Level Project Summary

According to a research report (published in the journal ‘Nature Climate Change’ on June 21) by theUS space research agency NASA, which says that a 'wobble' in Moon's orbit combined with rising sealevels due to climate change will lead to devastating floods on Earth. By the middle of 2030, the disaster will increase two to three times. The height of the sea water will also increase. Many times people in coastal areas do not get flood forecast information, due to lack of good networkcommunication. We have developed a system that will send notification alert to the mobile phone onlyif there is a possibility of flooding through the use of the system.

Detailed Project Description

During natural disasters, people in coastal areas do not get real-time information due to lack of good network connectivity. For them, we have developed a system that will monitor the height of the river water. When the device realizes by its ultrasonic sensor that the height of the water has increased abnormally, that system will send notification alert to the mobile phones of the people of the coastal areas. We can use two mediums to send notification alert, namely, through the GSM module and through the FM radio transmitter. It will be able to send notification alert through GSM with the help of Arduino, for which we will use GSM SIM 800 C module. We have used an FM transmitter alongside the GSM to send notification alert alert messages which is capable of creating a continuous network of 1 to 1.4 km in a coastal area.

this system, when one network communication is broken, the other network will be able to do its work. The special feature of this system is that it is powered by solar power with battery. As a result, the people of the coastal areas will be able to easily get the flood forecast. We hope that it is possible to increase awareness by using this system in coastal areas. For this we have developed an Android application which features are:

1. Our app can detect nearest SOS COM device station.

2. When a nearby device transmits signal, our app can sent notification alert to our installed app on the user’s phone.

3. Our app can show the graph of water level.

Space Agency Data

According to NASA DATA,NASA'S have Earth-observing Satellites they provide information about the situation on the ground that can only be obtained from the perspective of space. These satellites transmit signal 1700-1710 MHz. Synthetic aperture radar can scan the Earth's surface at night and in all weather conditions by transmitting a radar signal to the ground that reflects back to the source. They used the satellite data to measure and map the rate of rainfall, detect areas with power outages, and predict soil moisture, a factor in flash flooding. The high-regulation ASTET and Advanced land imager sensors mapped the extent of flood inundation as the foods evolved. NASA supported scientists modeled the predicted extent of flooding and mapped the actual extent for FEMA.

Hackathon Journey

I found Nasa Space Apps Challenge(Hack-A-Thon) very welcoming, especially for the newbies.

learnt how to work as a team to achieve something in intense pressure and how to communicate with mentors in terms of getting help from them about our project.

Our team worked on a flood awareness system. We felt really obliged to do something to reduce the sufferings of people living in the coastal areas for their livelihood so that they could leave for a safer place before its too late.

We approached from various realistic perspective before executing our project. Basically, we tried to make something which is easy to execute as well as effective.

All members of our team contributed equally to make our project a reality. We faced a lot of challenges like Sensors not working or setbacks like having no idea how to make 240 seconds video etc. But, we overcame those issues with enthusiasm and excitement.

I'd like to thank everyone who worked dusk to dawn to make this hack-a-thon possible. I'd like to specially thank the mentors for their amazing help, volunteers for everything they did for us. And lastly, I'd wholeheartedly thank my team members who supported each other in every moment to make a footstep in this amazing competition.

Thanks!
