Making SPACE
The object of the game is to collect cards to create a James Web Space Telescope (JWST) image, learn facts about the JWST and to move around the board. The winner gets to the end first and has created one (1) or JWST images.
Parts:
Star card - main cards to play - each card will have a explain a fact or event and tell the player how many spaces to move
JWST image card - one image per card with points assigned
Black hole card - card either forward or back to the next black hole space - part of the event cards
Event card - card that explains something
Worm hole card - card sends the player forward or backward
To begin, each player chooses a game piece to move around the board. Could be a simple shape or a complicated piece. Ex. square pegs versus a space dog (a dog with a clear bubble around his head)
Steps
The dealer shuffles the deck of Star cards. Deals each player five (5) cards.
Dealer turns over four (4) Star cards face up. Stack the balance of the Star cards face down.
Dealer also deals five (5) JWST image cards from which the player chooses what card to keep and which to discard. Each JWST image card will have a number value assigned related to the complexity of the image.
Each player will start with five (5) Star cards and one (1) to five (5) JWST image cards.
Player to the left of the dealer starts.
Player starts by picking up an Event card or pick-up a Star card that is showing or a Star card from the facedown deck.
If the player selects an Event card, the player then reacts accordingly. ex. You’ve met James Web, move forward five (5) spaces. Then the player moves their piece five (5) spaces forward.
If the player chooses from Star card the faceup or a from the deck, that’s the end of the players turn. The player chose to collect a Star card. Then the next player has a turn.
The next turn the player may choose to lay down Star cards with a minimum of three (3) or more matching. Points are totaled and the player moves their game piece x-number of spaces. (These images would be created from the JWST library.)
Along the way, each player will learn facts about the JWST while having a variety of encounters, (good and bad). ex. Player could land on the black hole and the player gets sent back to the beginning or the player could draw an Event card such as the black hole and it will send the player either forward or backward depending on what the card says.
The goal of the game is to collect all pieces to create the JWST image card(s) and move their game piece around the board reaching the end first.
Adaptations
This game can be adapted to teach about the solar system, etc.
Advanced versions could have the players create their own environment like a new constellation named after themselves. Adaption to electronic versions where players can play with others virtually. A virtual reality version could be adapted as well.
