FindStar: Maybe you're already a star

High-Level Project Summary

Our task is to create an application that will find the user a star in the sky with his name. Every person has the opportunity to purchase a star and call it whatever they want. Someone buys stars for themselves, someone gives them to loved ones, someone names them in honor of the deceased closed to the heart. One way or another, the star retains its name after years and we want to give a person the opportunity to find a star with his name and its location in the sky. So with the help of our application we want to inspire people and give them feeling of being a part of something big and infinite like the sky. We believe that in this way we will contribute to the popularization of science.

Detailed Project Description

When you open our application, the main page appears, which offers the user two options: find a star or buy it. When you select "find a star", the application will switch to the next page offering the user to type in the name on which he wants to find a star. A search program using NASA data will search in their database for the most similar results and sorting them by degree of similarity will give the user. The user will be able to view different options given by the search engine. When clicking on a certain star found by the search engine, the user will be redirected to the page of this star, where its exact name and location will be spelled out.

If the user chooses "buy a star", the application will switch to a page that will recommend him sites that are engaged in the official sale of stars, provide instructions on what data he will need for this and a link to all of the above resources. After purchase star user bought can be found in section "find star".

Space Agency Data

At the coding stage, we plan to use NASA databases displaying certain stars and their locations.

Hackathon Journey

Our way of working on this project is not over yet, but we have already worked well together thanks to the hackathon. We are satisfied with the fruits of our work at the moment and do not plan to stop there. We haven't managed to do much these days, but we are still glad that we have found a way to easily captivate people with science, especially we hope it will interest children and teenagers and will inspire them to do science.
