High-Level Project Summary
We can visualize and quantify nighttime light using NOAA datasets and Google Earth Engine.Our team members hypothesized that nighttime light correlates with economic activity.Therefore, we investigated the correlation between nighttime light and Japan's population, new coronavirus infections, and sales in the restaurant industry.As a result, there was a strong correlation between night light and population, and a weak correlation between night light and economic activity.

Detailed Project Description
We can visualize and quantify nighttime light using NOAA datasets and Google Earth Engine.
Our team members hypothesized that nighttime light correlates with economic activity.
Therefore, we investigated the correlation between nighttime light and Japan's population, new coronavirus infections, and sales in the restaurant industry.
As a result, there was a strong correlation between night light and population, and a weak correlation between night light and economic activity.
Space Agency Data
The satellite data we used is NOAA/DMSP-OLS/NIGHTTIME_LIGHTS. We extracted the magnitude of nighttime light from 2019 to 2022 for each municipality in Japan and investigated its correlation with existing demographic indicators and economic indicators. Correlations were confirmed for each, indicating that nighttime light could serve as an alternative indicator for them.
Hackathon Journey
Through hackathons, I learned about the existence of NASA datasets and how to use programming software that I didn't know before. What we learned was data extraction using Google Earth Engine.
