THE MECHANICAL BATTERY

High-Level Project Summary

We developed a Flywheel energy storage system which converts its kinetic energy stored in a rotating mass to electrical energy. It solves many problems, like the need of a storage system which can operate on Venus for 60 days. The main benefits of our system is that it can not only recharge very quickly but it can also provide energy for a long period of time. There is a very low chance of operational failure and it can withstand the vibrations along with the hellish environmentof Venus.

Detailed Project Description

It will provide energy to the rover or the surface lander, It converts the stored kinetic energy into electrical energy. When the Flywheel is spun by the motor the energy given into the the Flywheel by the motor is stored into kinetic energy of the spinning flywheel, The Flywheel will spin up to very high speeds and will continue to spin for a very long time due to little to no resistance because of the vacuum and the magnetic bearing. Then the same motor acts ad a generator to the turn the energy stored in the Flywheel into electrical energy. There are many benefits of this mechanical battery, such as it has a very high power density, it requires little no maintenance, it can be recharged in a very short time and that it is 90 to 95 percent energy efficient. We hope to achieve a energy storage system that can operate on Venus, which can be used to collect data and transmit that data back to earth.

Space Agency Data

We learned from the mistakes and success from the previous missions on Venus. We analyzed on what went wrong and what went right. From the data we collected, we enhanced our design according it so it can Work in the atmosphere of Venus.

The data we collected was from this site :

Hackathon Journey

Our team of Five Registered for the local event of Karachi which was held at the Salim Habib University,

Even though the venue was far away from where we lived we still had a lot of fun. We got to interact and meet with other students from other educational institutes and the team there was amazing. We learned new things and as we got to see the ideas of others it taught us how all these challenges were so versatile. We were astonished at looking the ideas of others. The team there was so helpful and cooperative. They answered all our queries and helped us further develop our idea. what inspired us to choose this challenge is the possibility of life on Venus as it is Earth's Sister planet. Before even the start of hackathon we had a rough idea on what we were going to do as we went on the project only got more clearer and clearer. In the end I would like to thank the Go team and our local lead as it was a wonderful experience and that we got to learn a lot from it.
