WE WILL INHABIT MARS

High-Level Project Summary

The challenge we choose is to equip a habitat on Mars: a 3d printing challenge. This allows us to open ourselves to the possibility of inhabiting mars; our projection is to do it in the most comfortable possible way.We proposes the construction of furniture and tools from puzzle-like blocks of a three-dimensional scale. It allows also multifunctional furniture construction saving spaces. It coulds innovate earth design techniques. The astronauts will be able to live the experience of creating the furniture, in a simple and at the same time in an entertaining way. In the same way they will be able to use the multifunctional tools created by our team for the development and maintenance.

Detailed Project Description

WHAT DOES IT DO AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

We design easy to use tools; merging existing objects, in order to reduce storage space and construction material. The original function for which the tool was created will not be affected.

Among the utensils that can be created with 3D printers and that meet the required dimensions are:

SCREWDRIVER

The screwdriver will be made up of two parts, one of which will be the handle made of plastic and the tip will have a threaded shape to be able to change the tips according to its use, the second part is made up of the tip of the screwdriver, which will be made of metal, where the upper part will have the design of the corresponding tip and the lower part will be made of plastic with the shape of a thread to be able to adjust it to the handle.

HAMMER

The hammer will be made of Martian regolith covered with metal, only the upper part of the hammer will be built with a small part of the handle which will be made of plastic in the form of a thread so that it can be adjusted to the handle of the screwdriver.

PLASTIC HAMMER

The hammer is entirely made of plastic, this tool is created with the aim of making it even easier to assemble and disassemble the lego type pieces.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE

We design a multifunctional piece of furniture which consists of a sofa; that will fulfill the function of bed, table, desk and wardrobe; It has two pull-out drawers in which you can store personal items, such as: photographs, newspapers, clothing, among others. This will have a drawer available to store shoes, clothes or, failing that, blankets.

The table will also serve as a support for the furniture when reclining the backrest, becoming part of the bed.

FLOWER POT

The pot will have some supports in the form of cylinders which will be fastened to each other with screws and thus unfold the other two levels or collect them as the case may be, it will also have a container made of plastic, one smaller than the other, in which plants can be placed.

WHEEL FOR ROVER

The wheel will be built according to the restrictions of the metal 3D printer, assembled parts under the same concept that we have handled assembly. They will be parts that are within the printing ranges and that screws will be used for the assemblies.

In order not to unbalance the grip of the wheels of the rover, we will leave the same design of the projections that it currently has, what we will modify is the configuration of the wheel with the central crown remaining the same size as the original wheel so that it fits perfectly.

PUZZLE BLOCK

We desing a type of 3D blocks who are inspired in the puzzle game. The resistance of the furniture is very strongh dispate assembly of many small block. Its allow make a multiple construction of a variety of furniture, since beds, chairs and tables to other kind of furniture to asist to planting plants.

The desing and assembly of the furniture could encourage the creativity of the astronauts.

Space Agency Data

Accounting with NASA data, we collected information about the different aspects of the Rover curiosity, such as; its size, its resistance, and its methods to collect information, we also had accessed to information related to the red planet, such as; the climate, its rocks, its minerals.

From the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), we observe the results of the tests they have carried out with their probe Rover, adding improvements such as; a laser that detects objects located at a certain distance. The CSA MET is an outdoor test facility with workspace dimensions simulating that of Mars

Hackathon Journey

Our experience in the space apps challenge was inspiring as we work with different experts both in situ and through discord, having the possibility to resolve different concerns about our challenge. we could also describe this experience as a view of the future in which phelhaps some of us could find ourselves in a few years.
