Easy wheel for Perseverance rover

High-Level Project Summary

We have developed a wheel that is printed on a 3d printer in parts. The advantage of our wheel is that it can be recreated on Mars and used as a replacement for the worn-out wheel of the Perseverance rover. We have also created a special tool necessary for repair and operation - three-in-one - a knife, a phillips screwdriver and a hexagon wrench for screws.

Detailed Project Description

The wheel consists of parts that are printed on 3D printers. The outer rim of the wheel is made of plastic (polymer). The inner part of the wheel is made of metal. All components of the wheel fit the printer parameters. The parts of the outer rim are connected by grooves. The inner part is fastened with screws with an internal hexagon.

This development gives the advantage that our wheel can be quickly recreated on small 3D printers and easily assembled in parts.

We hope to achieve a convenient technology for recreating the rover wheel.

The 3D model of the wheel was created in the AutoCAD program.

Our three-in-one tool is made of the following parts: the removable handle is made of plastic, and the main part is made of metal.

Hackathon Journey

Our experience of participating in this hackathon consisted of several stages. The main and first stage was the exhaustion of creativity and the solution of the problem in a short time. Finding inspiration from various sources and thinking about the optimal design option both in terms of saving material and design. Practicality, lightness and reliability - that's what we tried to achieve. The second stage was the implementation of the plan, to implement the idea with the help of programs and get the desired result. The third and important stage was in data processing and evaluation of the work, faced with some setbacks, we did not despair and would like to achieve maximum results. Most of all, we had a creative approach rather than a scientific and technical one.

In conclusion, we would like to thank the organizers for such a great chance to become part of a large-scale project, the organizers on behalf of Uzbekcosmos for holding a hackathon in Uzbekistan as a branch of this event. And also a special thank you for the organization, all conditions were provided for comfortable offline participation.

We used NASA's open database of 3D models to implement our project, and we also worked in the AutoCAD program. We were inspired by the idea and used our ingenuity and creativity.
