Outfitting a Mars Habitat: A 3D Print Challenge

High-Level Project Summary

Imagine the year is 2033, and you are one of 4 astronauts who flew to a 1 year mission on Mars. You have the habitat build already, but you have no furniture or anything else. In this challenge we tried to make a list of furniture and other things, that will help the astronauts to keep their sanity and to do effective work. The modeling took in consideration only 1 habitat. The design is unique to keep the interest, and to keep the astronauts healthy. We all saw in the last few years how it is hard to be locked in the same space for prolong time, it may harm mental health and overall health. Therefore enormous importance in designing the interior of the habitat.

Detailed Project Description

We used Solidworks student addition for modeling. Most of the parts have drawings in PDF which explain how to print general size and what material was used.

In the demo we used the 3D printed housing for experiment here on earth, and took the information from NASA site to get understanding of the size of a house and its general looks.

In the Demo you can see the pictures of our imaginary habitat as we see it with our models that we made during the last 48 hours.

We made all of the models from our previous experience and "gut feelings".

Unfortunately, due to time and our knowledge we didn't get to do all the things we wanted.

In the future we hope to add:

System for disinfection to the toilet so we can destroy all the bacteria in the feces in order to use this as compost.

Games that can provide relaxing and fun time.

Washing machine that works by the energy that generates from sport bike while using them.

Analysis on the parts we made, to see how we can make them better.

More furniture and improvements to our current project.

Hackathon Journey

It was the first time in hackathon challenge for most of the team. It was a learning experience and we have a long way to go to perfect our skills. It was fun and hard. Mostly we learned how to deal with unspecified challenge when you know little to no conditions. Most setbacks were because of the size of 3D printer and we changed the design and sizes depends on what part.

We had great mentors and judges during the hackathon who helped and made us consider different aspects of the challenge.
