Olympus: solutions to life on mars

High-Level Project Summary

We design based on the problems raised and the needs that should be attented first starting with a creative tool that can be adjusted to most kinds of nuts and bolts, wheels for the rover designed by parts that can been assembly due the size of the wheel that exceed the capacity of the 3D printer we put our personal touch on the tread of the wheel being inspired on off road and baja race wheels that improve traction and expulsion of dust and finally the most relevant for us was creating an enviroment on the habitat for the explorers where they can stay conserving the temperature through modular panels that conserve energy and modular furniture for chairs, sofa, bed and even a desk.

Detailed Project Description

We divided our efforts on 3 subchallenges

  1. Wheels of the rover
  2. Habitat
  3. Tools

1.Wheels of the rover

This tire has the dimensions of the tires of the Mars Curiosity and Perseverance, however, its carving stands out more than that of the other rovers, thinking about the lines towards the outside in order to be able to avoid dust and rocks from Mars stay on the tire of the rover. The tire is assembled like a puzzle, which due to its pattern is repetitive, there are 6 pieces that are repeated throughout the assembly, this assembly is joined with screws.

2.Habitat

(we dont have enough time to designed solutions or blueprints) but we had some concerns about the use of energy and conservations of the temperature on the habitat, our proposes are created modular panels with 3d printing with the CO2 filament covering all the walls, on the other side creating clothes with the 3d printer of plastic for the explorer specially for the moments that they should spend on the habitat and finally, with the plastic printer make modular forniture with a solid base and on the top printing on the same pieze a structure with less density creating comfortables furnitures that could form a bed, chairs or sofas.

3. Tools

the most relevant of our tools are the one that could replaced the losted tools on the landing, its a tool printed both on metal and plastic, metal the main base that had a lot of small metal bars on a base with multiple holes that are pushed by a magnet with same pole with the small bars that allow to attach to any nut or bolt to be able to filled the gaps with a plastic handle,

the other tools are more related to the day to day routine, we designed a spoon on a fork creating a single solution for the plastic printer and the knife a separate solution on the metal printer becauses for us have the knife has the possibility to used it on different circunstances and a normal plate for the food that could be printed on any need.

Space Agency Data

We used over all the data of the papers of NASA related to the rovers on mars

https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/index.html

principally the ROVER 3D

https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/rover-3d/

Because it had the sizes and guides us a lot to understand the possible improvements of the wheel

For the habitat we found a lot of papers and ideas from the nasa page

https://www.nasa.gov/feature/students-design-space-habitat-concepts-for-mars

where guide us to understand the main needs that could been solved with 3d printing

Hackathon Journey

At first we saw hot the problemes that are raised as challenges that seems distant have so much validitu and are so close to life on earth, the humanity has solved problems to adapt the enviroment of the earth to the needs of us, Mars its the next step and presents different problems related to the enviroment of mars that have other variables different form the one that we already know, this inspired us to find the way to achieve the possibility of live on Mars as an option if we need a second home on the future, our approach is 3D printing, we imagine that the explorers will need solutions that do not require great manual skills created to solve basic problems with basic and reliable engineering, at first we tought that high technology solutions are the way, but on a new planet with limited resources we need to go to the reliable as our ancestors before the metal revolution do, we learn that we are a single community a single planet a single raze looking for a better future, we are not as far as we tough we are all on the same vibe of evolution, our history and not being writted as nations, are writted as raze, as a single planet looking forward.

We resolve the challeng looking for the basics, for the main needs of a human on a new enviroment and then using the learnings of the evolution of our tools and technologies.
