Martian Mission - Alpha 1

High-Level Project Summary

Our challenge is to design tools, furniture, and other items to assist us on our one-year mission. We designed a replacement rover wheel to replace the broken wheel in our rover. We took inspiration from the NASA perseverance rover wheel for the tread patterns. The wheel has closed wheel caps, to to keep sand and rocks out as suggested in the Potential Considerations. To assist us on our mission in Mars, we designed Martio; a multi-purpose device that has built-in features like ground scanning, always-active seismic wave detection, weather updates, temperature detection, rover tracking and solar panel charging. The batteries and screen technology have been taken from the landing craft.

Detailed Project Description

Replacement Rover Wheel

  • Tread is made of small triangular pieces. 75% of the pieces are metal and 25% of pieces are plastic due to shortage of metal. The tread pattern is taken from the perseverance rover.
  • The wheel cap is made of concrete to ensure that it does not collapse. It is also completely closed so that stones do not get stuck inside and weigh it down.

Multi-purpose tool - Martio

The Martio in an uniquely designed model that is perfect for the regulation of the Mars base and the update of the weather. It has built-in features like ground scanning, always-active seismic wave detection, weather updates, temperature detection, rover tracking and solar panel charging. It's a heat protective model and has an 5'6 inch display. This device/tool makes the habitat on Mars more controllable and can access information that was available to us before, as you have all the details you want, under a device. I have used an 3D modelling app called 'Paint 3D' to model this device. I haven't coded it as it is just the model and its working can be edited in anyway.

Space Agency Data

Multi-purpose tool - Martio:

This Project was inspired by Nasa's 'InSight' Rover which was sent in May 5, 2018. I used its' seismic investigation feature and added an Gyroscopic sensor in the device.

Hackathon Journey

We'd rate our experience with the Space apps challenge an 5 out of 5. It was an fantastic experience with the NASA's given challenge. This challenge was chosen because it may be an breakthrough for humanity in contact to other planets, to colonize planets like mars and know more about it. There were not many setbacks in the challenge.
