Outfitting a Mars Habitat: A 3D Print Challenge

High-Level Project Summary

We designed new rover wheels and provided the files to the final project link. We also designed modular furniture and brought some ideas into our demo. More details and a breakdown of the project are presented in the demo/final project link,

Detailed Project Description

Our project implements a new design of the Rover wheels. We designed them in such a way that rocks would not get stuck in the rim of the wheel. The choice of material was 316L Stainless steel for the shaft and the rim. For the tire, we choose TPU because of the rubbery properties of the material. The diameter of the wheel is 525mm and the width is 300mm.

We also implemented design for concrete furnitures; more specifically a modular table design. It consists of two bottom parts which have storage sections enough for storing a helmet and other equipment. The table can be completed with the tabletop part. The pieces can also be used as a chair, bed, or staircases by combining the bottom parts together.

In addition to two designs, we came up with a lot of other concepts and ideas of what could be accomplished by 3D printers.

Hackathon Journey

Very nice being here with our team of 4 members. This was the first time attending a hackathon for all of us and it really enlightened our view of these events. I would like to thank our hosts here at Vaasa Muova.
